The Elites were losing in troops and vehicles because the Covenant had all the forerunner technology and still believed in ‘The Great Journey’ but with their leader ship screwed up even more caused the Brutes to fight among themselves.

Why did the grunts side with the Elites?

Some of them, their alliance was with the Elites so they helped them when they broke away . Others sided with the Brutes out of fear, blind faith, or they thought the Brutes would win. This went for all species besides Brutes, Elites and Prophets. Some Grunts stayed with Loyalists some left with the Sepratists.
