Do Sailors Get Leave After Navy Boot Camp? After Navy boot-camp graduation,
sailors will not be given leave and are required to travel to their next training location, A School
. There are many locations for Navy A School, and not all sailors will go to the same school.
What happens after Navy boot camp is an event called
Pass-In-Review
. Pass-In-Review is a ceremony that recognizes the efforts it took to complete Navy boot camp. Recruits leave for their technical school rather quickly after Navy boot camp.
After their
ten days
of leave, they will check into their new unit at their first duty station. Sailor's with overseas duty stations may receive more than ten days of leave before having to report to their next unit.
You'll take your first academic test during this week. Then comes the confidence course, where you will work with a team to simulate a shipboard emergency
. Together, you'll pass through small passages in full gear, toss life rings and put on firefighting equipment. Now your hands-on training takes center stage.
Specific underway schedules can vary widely. Normally ships will go to sea for 10 days to 2 weeks each month for training operations in preparation for deployment. Extended operations away from home port can last up to 6 to 9 months, and ships typically deploy
once every 18-24 months
.
Basic Training
If you have NOT been to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and have NOT taken an Oath of Enlistment,
you are free to quit the process at any time
.
Where you are stationed will typically determine the locations you will deploy
. For instance, ships and submarines stationed in Norfolk, VA will deploy throughout the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, as well as around the Coast of Africa and into the Persian Gulf (depending on the regions with the most turmoil).
Can you come home during basic training?
It's a privilege that has to be earned. Because calling home is an earned privilege (for your group) and is different for everyone depending on how your basic training unit performs,
you may get only one phone call during your entire time at basic, or you may get as many as eight or 10 chances to call home
.
Recruits have
three guaranteed calls
during boot camp: the “I'm here” call the night they arrive, the “I'm still alive” call in the 3rd week of training, and the “I'm a sailor” call in their 7th week. Any other calls have to be earned. Some divisions earn a half-dozen calls, others never earn an extra call.

Recruit Training Command (RTC)
, the Navy's enlisted boot camp, has extended the duration of its basic military training (BMT) program from eight to 10 weeks.
Recruit training, or “boot camp,” will be
approximately seven weeks
long. The goal of this training is to transform you from a civilian into a Sailor with all of the skills necessary to perform in the fleet.
The first three weeks of Navy Boot Camp are clearly the toughest (physically, and stressfully)
. Get through the first three weeks, and you'll almost assuredly graduate. As with Army and Air Force Basic Training, during the first couple of weeks, you'll find that no one can seem to do anything right.
Recruits will do their final phone calls home
upon completion of their final test
, the 12-hour, overnight Battle Stations-21 (BST-21). This test can take place anywhere from eight to two days prior to graduation, depending on the number of divisions in a training group.
The Navy offers a very few
two year and three year
contracts, where the recruit spends two or three years on active duty, followed by six years in the Active Reserves. The other services offer four, five, and six year enlistment options (The Air Force only offers four and six year enlistments).
Navy Boot Camp First Phone Call
At RTC Great Lakes, all recruits are allowed a ten-second call to let their family know they have arrived.
Recruits that still have a cell phone make the call from their personal phone; others use telephones provided by the Navy
.
The ship will shut off email access during a crisis in order to control communications. This is part of the reason why they are
not allowed to have personal phones in use while not in port
.
Many staffs and units embark on Navy ships, and
a wireless capability allows them to maintain connectivity without the need to run wires across a ship
. Wolborsky adds that there is a cost saving associated with installing a wireless network versus forcing every network access into a hard-wired drop.
Navy personnel are called
sailors
, those in the Marine Corps are called “Marines” (note the capitalized M), the Coast Guard calls its people “Coast Guardsmen,” and the National Guard uses whatever branch personnel belong to (Air National Guard members called airmen, for example).
Do you go to jail if you quit the military?
Attempted desertion also is charged as a military crime, as long as the attempt went beyond mere preparation
. Desertion carries a maximum punishment of dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay, and confinement of five years.
Will I lose my job if I go to basic training?
No, by law all companies have to provide you with the required time off for military obligation provided that you supply them with a copy of your orders for the weekend drill or 2 week drill. They also have to save your job for you so that way you have your job upon returning.
What happens if you dont pass basic training?
If a recruit has been recycled and still cannot pass the assessment, then
they will be given an Entry-Level Separation (ELS)
. An ELS is given at the leadership's discretion. Processing an ELS can take weeks or months, and those awaiting processing are usually given some form of manual labor to pass the time.
Career Sea Pay for enlisted members can range from a monthly rate of
$60 to $805
depending on your paygrade and how many years of sea time you have. Sea pay is paid to members assigned to ships or to commands that are deployed onboard a ship.
Therefore,
during Navy basic training, you won't get to fire the M16 rifle. Instead, you qualify with the M9 pistol and the Mossberg 500 shotgun
. The Navy is unique in that before you get to handle an actual weapon, you get a chance to fire the weapon on a computerized simulator.
Navy deployment
Ship- or sub-based deployments typically last
six or seven months
, though occasionally they will go longer. The time at sea may be broken up by port calls, where the ship pulls into a town and the sailors are permitted to go ashore and enjoy some time off.
A.
No, recruits at Ship 5 are permitted to write letters every day
. Their only restrictions are when there is formal instruction taking place or they are standing watch. Additionally, they are not authorized to write or read letter after lights out (2200).
Do you get to come home for Christmas during basic training?
The Army is the only branch of the military that honors the Christmas Exodus break for all recruits who are in basic training and AIT. Basically,
the Army shuts down all of its training schools during exodus to allow their drill sergeants and instructors to have a break at Christmas
.
