If you’ve seen my RAGBRAI training plan, you will notice how I recommend building up to your longer rides gradually, adding about 5 miles to each long ride each week. If you start with 15 miles now, but June you will be able to do 80 miles.
Do you need to train for RAGBRAI?
Riding to train for RAGBRAI is training
. It doesn’t have to be fast but it has to be long enough to get your ready for long hours on RAGBRAI. It is still training, all the same. So go do some training, athletes!
How do I train for the RAGBRAI?
You can’t really prepare for RAGBRAI by riding a stationary bike or by walking or running, although these activities will contribute to a higher level of fitness. You need to come as close as you can to simulating the ride, which means
riding hills, riding against the wind, riding long miles day after day
.
Is cycling harder than spinning?
Spinning:
Spinning uses the same muscles as road biking
. However, the weight of the fl ywheel ( 14-18kg) increases the number of pedal strokes per minute, forcing the hamstrings to work harder. Cycling: Cycling uses all the major lower-body muscles – the glutes, hamstrings, quads, shins and calves.
Can I train for an Ironman on a spin bike?
While transporting it can be a bit of a pain, it’s worth it: even the best spinning bikes won’t duplicate the triathlon biking position. As long as you have even a bit of room,
you can also get all your training done at home on rollers or on trainers

How many miles should you ride before RAGBRAI?
At the very least, you should try to work your way up to
at least a 70 mile
ride before the start of RAGBRAI. A great way to do this if you haven’t ridden a long ride before is to sign up for a local one-day organized ride.
How many riders are on RAGBRAI?
RAGBRAI is limited to
an estimated 8,500 week-long riders and 1,500 daily riders
. Entries can exceed the number of riders allowed, so a random computer lottery takes place after all of the entries are entered in the computer. Lottery results are available online on May 1, 2018.
How long does it take to train for RAGBRAI?
Yes, you have
five months
to prepare, but time will go fast so it’s not too early to start thinking about getting (back) on your bike and starting to get your body in shape. If you are snowbound like us, you can do the miles even on a spin bike or indoor trainer until the weather warms up.

Is it OK to spin everyday?
Even once you’ve found your spinning legs,
daily sessions may still be overkill
. But if you’re looking for a high-intensity workout a few days a week—and especially if running or other forms of vigorous aerobic exercise hurt your joints—spinning may be the ideal way to keep your heart and body in shape.
Is a spin bike worth it?
A good spin bike can last a lifetime of exercise with very little service

excellent for a mid-week session when it’s frankly just easier to get to your gym, or as a fun way to provide motivation during a training slump
. However, indoor cycling does NOT take the place of training outside on your bike for a few reasons: You are not always getting a triathlon-specific workout.

With the route now mapped, RAGBRAI XLVIII will cover
455.5 miles
from July 25-31, up from 426 miles when it was first announced in January. The Le Mars-to-Clinton route is the same one planned for 2020, except that Sac City and DeWitt will replace Storm Lake and Maquoketa as overnight towns.
How long does it take to go a mile on a bike?
It only takes
three to four minutes
to bike a mile on average, given that you go at speeds of 17 to 18 mph. However, you can only achieve this feat if you have a good bicycle. Biking on flat terrains is a bonus.
What should I bring to RAGBRAI?
- Your RAGBRAI wristband.
- Identification, cash, one credit card, ATM card, a small wallet to carry on your person.
- Sunscreen for skin and lips, your prescription meds, ibuprofen.
- A fistful of ziplock bags.
- Cell phone and charger for electrical outlet (not the cigarette-lighter kind)
