Surgical Treatment:
For patients who require gluteus repair surgery, Dr. Nwachukwu will
use an arthroscopic (endoscopic) or open surgical approach
depending on the size and chronicity of the tear. The gluteus medius tear and/or gluteus minimus tear is reattached during surgery using sutures.
Can surgery fix a hip labral tear?
If a hip labral tear causes significant hip pain and symptoms do not improve with medical treatment or therapeutic injections,
NYU Langone doctors may recommend surgery to repair or reconstruct the labrum and fix any underlying structural abnormality that may have caused the labral tear
.
Will a gluteus minimus tear heal?
A tear of the gluteus tendon
may be treated with conservative options that may not require surgery
. A course of physical therapy and home exercise program may help strengthen the surrounding hip muscles and reduce pain.
Do you need surgery for a torn gluteus medius?
Surgical treatment may be recommended to repair a complete, full-thickness gluteus medius tear
. The surgery can be performed endoscopically through tiny incisions to reattach the torn tendon back onto the greater trochanter with stitches. This helps to restore strength and function to the gluteus medius muscle.
What causes a gluteus minimus tendon tear?
While the exact etiology of gluteus medius and gluteus minimus tears remains unknown, one proposed cause is
chronic degeneration of the muscle-tendon unit
. Over time, this degeneration can lead to tendinopathy and chronic lateral hip pain before ultimately tearing and retracting from the trochanteric attachment.
What does a gluteus minimus tear feel like?
Patients with gluteus medius or minimus partial or complete tears typically have
pain on the outside of their hip
, as opposed to patients with hip arthritis, where the pain is typically near the groin. Patients typically complain of pain rolling over in bed on the affected side.
What happens if you don’t repair torn tendons?
If left untreated, eventually it can result in other foot and leg problems, such as inflammation and pain in the ligaments in the soles of your foot (plantar faciitis), tendinitis in other parts of your foot, shin splints, pain in your ankles, knees and hips and, in severe cases, arthritis in your foot.
Is labral tear surgery worth it?
Doctors recommend labral tear surgery to patients who they think are good candidates
—these patient are not at high risk for surgical complications and are likely to have good postsurgical results. For other patients, a hip replacement or other hip surgery may be considered.
How successful is hip labral tear surgery?
The arthroscopic hip surgery success rate is around
85 to 90 percent
. The operation is performed to help restore your hip’s function, but it’s most successful at easing pain. It’s often difficult to return to vigorous use of the leg in sports or work.
How long is torn hip labrum surgery?
Any damaged or inflamed tissue is first debrided from the hip joint. The labrum is then inspected, and then your surgeon will recommend acetabular labral tear treatment such as hip labrum repair or labrum reconstruction as necessary. This minimally invasive surgery takes about
1-2 hours
to complete.
How long does a gluteus minimus take to heal?
It takes
three months
for your hip to fully recover from gluteal tendon and muscle repair.
What is a partial thickness tear of gluteus medius tendon?
Partial-thickness undersurface tears of the gluteus medius were identified as
a common pathologic entity
. Although these tears are otherwise analogous to partial-thickness tears of the rotator cuff, the lack of arthroscopic access to the deep side of the gluteus medius tendon represents a unique technical challenge.
How do you fix a torn gluteus medius?
Initial treatment involves
ice, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and activity modification to decrease pain and inflammation
. If a severe, full-thickness gluteus medius tear is present, surgical repair may be required.
What does the gluteus minimus do?
Gluteus minimus predominantly
acts as a hip stabilizer and abductor of the hip
. The muscle’s blood supply and innervation are from the superior gluteal artery and superior gluteal nerve, respectively. Damage to the nerve or muscle may result in sagging of the pelvis, also known as Trendelenburg sign.
How long can you wait to have surgery for a torn tendon?
Delayed tendon repair can be performed within
3 weeks to one month
after injury, but the repair is preferably done in initial several days of delay. Direct sheath closure is not advocated in tendon repair in the delayed period.
Is tendon repair a major surgery?
Tendon repair procedures
can be minor or major
, depending on the tendon involved and the extent of the injury.
Do tendons grow back together after surgery?
The tendon sheath that’s cut during surgery grows back together more loosely
so the tendon has more room to move. Sometimes people need more than one surgery.
Is labrum surgery a major surgery?
Labrum repair is major surgery
with serious risks and potential complications. You may have less invasive treatment options.
Can a labral tear Retear?
A torn labrum can usually be repaired with suture anchors during hip arthroscopy.
Once the labrum has been repaired and all bony impingement has been corrected there is a very small chance that the labrum will re-tear.
What happens if a shoulder labral tear goes untreated?
If left untreated, this may lead to
chronic or recurrent shoulder instability, pain, and weakness
.
