Can you drive by the Tent Rocks?
Many of these towering spires have the appearance of a massive golf ball perched on a tee. This interesting visual effect is achieved by hard boulder caps precariously attached to the tops of softer tapering hoodoos.
If Tiger Woods were Paul Bunyan-sized, Tent Rocks would be the ideal driving range.

One thing to note for locals or those traveling by car through New Mexico-the park is strict about no dogs being allowed in.
The tent rocks can be seen by car from a distance
and you can park and walk at their bases and I suggest if you have a decent car do both.

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is currently closed to the public
. During the closure, BLM has had the opportunity to work on projects to enhance the visitor experience upon reopening. Projects include upgrade to trails to alleviate safety concerns within the monument.

While fairly uniform in shape, the tent rock formations vary in height from a few feet up to 90 feet. Please note that

How do tent rocks form?
The area owes its remarkable geology to layers of volcanic rock and ash deposited by pyroclastic flow from a volcanic explosion within the Jemez Volcanic Field that occurred 6 to 7 million years ago. Over time,
weathering and erosion of these layers has created canyons and tent rocks

How were tent rocks formed?
The hoodoos, erosional cones, and pedestal rocks that characterize Tent Rocks form as the result of
differential erosion
(Smith, 1996). Water and, to a lesser extent, wind erosion preferentially attacks the moderately-indurated sand and ash grains around the base of large blocks in the gravel-rich beds.

Are pets allowed in Bandelier National Monument?
Pets can pose a danger to wildlife.
Pets are NOT permitted on any park trails
. They are allowed in Juniper campground, the parking lot in front of the visitor center, and in the Cottonwood Picnic Area across Frijoles Creek between the “No Dogs Permitted Beyond this Point” signs.
Can dogs go to Santa Fe Dam?
The lake is stocked with bass, trout and catfish. Other park amenities include picnic areas and hiking and biking trails.

. Additionally, visitors traveling with their pets are authorized to drive directly to the Monument and park in the Visitor Center Parking Area in Frijoles Canyon, and are not required to use the shuttle bus from White Rock.
Can you swim at Cochiti Lake?
The Cochiti Lake Project is fully opening its day use areas to the public starting July 1st, 2021. A reservation will no longer be required to recreate at the lake; however,
there will still be a $5.00 Swim Beach Day Use Fee and $5.00 Boat Launch Fee that can be purchased onsite or on Recreation.gov before arrival

Can you kayak at Cochiti Lake?
Boating is a popular way to spend time at Cochiti Lake, with a boat ramp open year-round.
This includes kayaking and canoeing
, as well as sailing and even motorized boating (as long as there is no wake).

Cochiti Lake is a No-Wake lake and
alcohol is not allowed
. Please be aware that all areas outside of the two recreation areas are lands owned by the Cochiti Pueblo and are not open to the public.
