Second-degree prolapse:
The organs have slipped down to the level of the vaginal opening
. Third-degree prolapse: The vagina or womb has dropped down so much that up to 1 cm of it is bulging out of the vaginal opening. Fourth-degree prolapse: More than 1 cm of the vagina or womb is bulging out of the vaginal opening.
Can you fix stage 2 prolapse?
Stage I and II uterine prolapse in particular can be helped by
pelvic floor muscle exercises
, but they need to be done correctly and practised long enough to strengthen the muscles.
How is second degree uterine prolapse treated?
Vaginal hysterectomy
is currently the leading treatment method for patients with symptomatic uterine prolapse. Several studies have shown that sacrospinous fixation in case of uterine prolapse is a safe and effective alternative to vaginal hysterectomy.
How do I know if my prolapse is severe?
- Sensation of heaviness or pulling in your pelvis.
- Tissue protruding from your vagina.
- Urinary problems, such as urine leakage (incontinence) or urine retention.
- Trouble having a bowel movement.
How many grades of prolapse are there?
It consists of
four grades
: grade 0 – no prolapse, grade 1–halfway to hymen, grade 2 – to hymen, grade 3 – halfway past hymen, grade 4 –maximum descent.
What happens if prolapse is left untreated?
If prolapse is left untreated, over time it may stay the same or slowly get worse. In rare cases, severe prolapse can
cause obstruction of the kidneys or urinary retention
(inability to pass urine). This may lead to kidney damage or infection.
Can you push a prolapse back into place?

Why is prolapse worse some days?
After a hysterectomy, when the uterus has been removed, the top of the vagina (known as the vault) can bulge downwards. Prolapse symptoms are often worse at the end of a day, with
prolonged standing
or at times of increased intra-abdominal pressure e.g. heavy lifting, coughing or straining to go to the toilet.
What should you not do with a prolapse?
If you have pelvic organ prolapse,
avoid things that could make it worse
. That means don’t lift, strain, or pull. If possible, try not to be on your feet for long periods of time. Some women find that they feel more pressure when they stand a lot.
How quickly can a prolapse get worse?
Prolapse, left untreated,
almost always gets worse over time
but this is usually a gradual change. “New” prolapse (noticed by a patient or doctor in the early postpartum period) will often get better within the first year after the delivery. This is one exception to the rule.
How do you fix a prolapse without surgery?
The two non-surgical options for prolapse are
pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) and a vaginal pessary
. PFMT can be effective for mild prolapse but is usually not successful for moderate and advanced prolapse. The main alternative to surgery for prolapse is a vaginal pessary.
Can you feel a prolapsed uterus with your finger?
Anterior (front) vaginal wall prolapse:
Insert 1 or 2 fingers and place over the front vaginal wall (facing the bladder) to feel any bulging under your fingers, first with strong coughing and then with sustained bearing down. A definite bulge of the wall under your fingers indicates a front vaginal wall prolapse.

- Grade 0: No prolapse.
- Grade 1: Halfway to the hymen.

Can you get a bloated stomach with a prolapse?
Abdominal bloating and/or flatulence can be a huge problem for women with prolapse problems. Some ladies find that by the end of the day their abdomen is so bloated that it puts strain on their belly and their prolapse causing abdominal pain and pelvic floor dragging and bulging.
What is Stage 2 bladder prolapse?
Stage 2 –
the bladder protrudes so far into the vagina that it’s close to the vaginal
opening. Stage 3 – the bladder protrudes out of the vagina. Stage 4 – most severe form, in which all pelvic organs including the bladder protrude out of the vagina.
