Why is Smith Rock called Smith Rock?
SOME SAY IT WAS NAMED AFTER JOHN SMITH
, LINN COUNTY SHERIFF AND OREGON LEGISLATOR IN THE 1850s and 1860s. A newspaper article in 1867 in the Albany States Right Democrat credits Smith with “discovering” Smith’s Rock. He had been traveling through the area while working for the Warm Springs Indian Agency.
