After Navy A School, sailors traditionally are given
10 days
of leave. After their 10 days of leave, they will check into their new unit at their first duty station. Sailors with overseas duty stations may receive more than 10 days of leave before having to report to their next unit.
How long is leave after boot camp?
Ten days
of Marine boot leave has finally returned. The traditional 10 days of leave granted to newly minted Marines after they graduate the grueling three months of boot camp was canceled as the Corps tried to fight COVID-19 during the pandemic.
Do Sailors Get Leave After Navy Boot Camp? After Navy boot-camp graduation,
sailors will not be given leave
and are required to travel to their next training location, A School. There are many locations for Navy A School, and not all sailors will go to the same school.
Basic Training
If you have NOT been to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and have NOT taken an Oath of Enlistment,
you are free to quit the process at any time
.
You receive 30 days of time off every year but can only hold 60 days at most
. You get 2 1/2 vacation days each month and after 60 days or so it goes into lose/use days that you must use or they get lost for the next quarter.
Specific underway schedules can vary widely. Normally ships will go to sea for 10 days to 2 weeks each month for training operations in preparation for deployment. Extended operations away from home port can last up to 6 to 9 months, and ships typically deploy
once every 18-24 months
.
Do you get a break between basic training AIT?
No. You’ll be given a few days to travel between your Basic Training location and Advanced Training location, but this isn’t considered an official break
. If you’ll be attending One Station Unit Training, you won’t receive travel time because your Basic Training and AIT will be held on the same base.
On federal holidays and Sundays, recruits are on “holiday routine.” This means free time in their compartments for letter writing, studying, more time spent for hygiene, read, attend church, etc.
For Christmas, they will enjoy a holiday dinner in their galley.
Navy. The Navy calls this Boot Camp. It is
a bit shorter than the Army’s Basic Combat Training
, at 8 weeks. You progress through: basic conditioning – confidence course – team-building week – hands-on training.
Can you go home after boot camp?
The one exception to this rule is that
you’re usually allowed to take a week or so of leave if you’re attending job training during Christmas week
. The Marine Corps grants 10 days of leave immediately following basic training graduation, prior to reporting to the School of Infantry.
How do I get out of boot camp?
If you’re still in the DEP period, you may be able to back out.
Contact the commander of recruiting for your area by mail
. The letter should say that you don’t want to go on active duty and that nothing will change your mind.
What happens if you drop out of boot camp?
Under no circumstances should you decide to go Absent Without Leave. This
could cause the Marine Corps to label you a deserter and may be punishable with jail time or even death
, according to the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Do you go to jail if you quit the military?
Attempted desertion also is charged as a military crime, as long as the attempt went beyond mere preparation
. Desertion carries a maximum punishment of dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay, and confinement of five years.

Sailors and Officers are eligible for
up to 30 days of paid vacation, accumulative up to 60 days

Do you get Sundays off in basic training?
No unless on shore duty
. Next to no days off while out to sea.
The ship will shut off email access during a crisis in order to control communications. This is part of the reason why they are
not allowed to have personal phones in use while not in port

Recruits have
three guaranteed calls
during boot camp: the “I’m here” call the night they arrive, the “I’m still alive” call in the 3rd week of training, and the “I’m a sailor” call in their 7th week. Any other calls have to be earned. Some divisions earn a half-dozen calls, others never earn an extra call.
Navy personnel are called

, those in the Marine Corps are called “Marines” (note the capitalized M), the Coast Guard calls its people “Coast Guardsmen,” and the National Guard uses whatever branch personnel belong to (Air National Guard members called airmen, for example).
