about 1810
when Frenchman Louis Lefleur established a trading post and inn on the Natchez Trace, the fabled trade route between Natchez and Nashville. The Choctaw natives and others in the area called it “The Frenchman’s Camp,” later shortened to “French Camp.”
Why was the first French Camp along the Mississippi given its name?
Louis LeFleur first traded with the Choctaw Indians at a bluff now part of Jackson, Mississippi. About 1812, he established his stand 900 feet to the northeast on the Natchez Trace.

the area was often called “French Camp”, a name retained by the present village.
