How long does a fluorescein angiogram take?
The actual procedure will take
10-20 minutes
. The average length of stay in our department can be 1-2 hours. Your medical history will be reviewed by a nurse before the test. Some individuals might experience slight nausea during the procedure.
Is fluorescein angiography necessary?
Your doctor may recommend a fluorescein angiography to
determine if the blood vessels in the back of your eye are getting adequate blood flow
. It can also be used to help your doctor diagnose eye disorders, such as macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.
Is fluorescein angiography safe?
Fluorescein angiography is a safe procedure
. As with all medications, fluorescein sometimes has side effects. Some patients have nausea or feel faint after the injection. This goes away in a few minutes.
What are the side effects of fluorescein?
- Bluish color.

- fast heartbeat.
- hives, itching, or skin rash.
- lightheadedness.
- noisy breathing.
How many days rest after angiogram?
Most people feel fine
a day or so
after having the procedure. You may feel a bit tired, and the wound site is likely to be tender for up to a week. Any bruising may last for up to 2 weeks.
Is fluorescein safe for kidneys?

Can I eat before fluorescein angiography?
Fluorescein Angiography can help your doctor diagnosis and treat many retinal problems. Be
sure to eat before you come to the Clinic

How long does fluorescein stay in your system?
The most common reaction is temporary yellowish discoloration of the skin and urine. Urine may attain a bright yellow color. Discoloration of the skin usually fades in 6 to 12 hours and usually fades in urine
in 24 to 36 hours

What types of diseases of the eye are best diagnosed using an angiogram?
- macular edema (swelling in the retina that distorts vision)

Is fluorescein toxic?

Can you be allergic to fluorescein?
A patient reacting to fluorescein or to ICG (mild to moderate reactions)
may be mislabeled “allergic”
although the reaction experienced was non-specific or toxic in its origin. An allergy study should be considered if there is a concern in giving these contrast media dyes in future needed procedures.
