The
low-side port
, like the name suggests, is lower on the pipes towards the front of the engine. While the low-side port is intended for recharging Freon, the high-side port is used for maintaining an air conditioner's internal pressure.
Do you put Freon in the high or low side?
The freon is
added on the LOW PRESSURE SIDE ONLY
. The hose tool you bought is made so you can only hook to the low side as the high side and low side fittings are different sizes and shapes for SAFETY'S SAKE.
Where is the AC low side service port?
The low side service valve is located
in the line that runs from the compressor through the evaporator (firewall) and up to the condensor on the low pressure (suction) side of the system

Which one is the low pressure AC port?
The low side service port is
usually located between the AC compressor and evaporator
. The low side service port will have a black or blue plastic cap that needs to be removed.
Which AC line is the high side?
The high side, or discharge line, will be
the line connected to the compressor from the bottom or lower position
. It will not be wrapped in insulation and will be warm to the touch. This is where freon exits the compressor as a liquid.

What should the high and low side pressures be?
The system should be
about 25 to 30 psi on the low side and 200 to 250 psi on the high side
. If the ambient temperature is higher or lower than normal (70 to 80°F) the pressures will go up or down accordingly.
Will AC leak without cap?
The cap doesn't do anything to prevent a refrigerant leak
, but I wouldn't drive around without it as it does keep keep dust/grit/water out of the port which can cause other issues and complicate future service.
What pressure should my home AC be at?
Your desired suction pressure is 33-48 degrees or
58-80 psi
depending on the indoor temperature. (Note: The hot or warm air from a hot house traveling across the evaporator coil will warm the refrigerant faster than normal causing a higher suction pressure.

Feel the
Larger Copper Pipe
on your AC Unit. The Copper Pipe (Suction Line) should be sweating and cold to the touch during a hot day. If it is not cold, your compressor could be off (bad capacitor/ hard start kit) or low on Refrigerant.
