Can I use carbon and Purigen together?

They can definately be used together

, and also using carbon should make your Purigen last a lot longer. I use both. They do different things for the most part. If you had to choose, I would use a very good grade carbon first, and purigen second.

Can purigen be used with carbon?

It is safe to use Purigen® alongside most Seachem® products except for medications, which

should never be used with any type of chemical filter media

(carbon, phosphate absorbers, etc).

Can you use too much purigen?

Purigen® will never become toxic through overuse

, but there are several situations under which it is beneficial to allow some organic waste to build up in the aquarium.

Is purigen the same as carbon?

Purigen is a synthetic polymer resin that helps in reduction of nitrates. Carbon or GAC(granular activated carbon) removes toxins and tannins from the water. 2

totally different products, but purigen does do some of the things GAC does

.

Does purigen remove plant nutrients?

Although the organic precursors of nitrogenous compounds are absorbed,

Purigen does not remove nitrate, urea and phosphate

, so your aquarium plants still have sufficient amounts of the macronutrients they need.

Does purigen remove aquarium salt?

Purigen is also equally useful for saltwater tanks

. Purigen is capable of absorbing the toxins released by the corals and anemones in your tank.

How long does it take for purigen to work?

How long does it take for Purigen to work? The maximum time required for the purigen to do its work of clearing the water is

24 hours

. If it does not work even after 24 hours, then remove it. Recharge it and place it in the tank again.

Does purigen affect pH?

Purigen® does not release any buffering agents or acids into the water, nor is it capable of impacting the mineral concentration in any way, so

it will not directly impact the pH, KH, or GH of the aquarium

.

How much purigen do I need for a 20 gallon tank?

Water Volume 1 gal / 4 L 10 gal / 20 L Purigen® Dose (mL)

1 mL

10 mL
Purigen® Dose (Tsp) 1/5 tsp 2 tsp

Does purigen make water clear?

The first two are day one putting Purigen in my filter and tap water from my well in my tank, the next is just three days later.

It cleared up all of my “new tank” cloudiness!

Should I use carbon in my canister filter?

In general,

using activated carbon in your filter is a good thing, but not a necessity

. If you are testing your water, doing regular partial water changes, and dechlorinating the replacement tap water, you really don’t need to use carbon.

Does seachem Purigen remove odor?

Purigen® absorbs organics like tannins and nitrogenous waste

. These types of waste discolor the water, cause clouding, and can lead to poor fish health and foul odor in the aquarium. Purigen® helps to keep your water crystal clear and your waste levels low by clearing away these organics.

Does purigen remove heavy metals?

Valuable Member. Right, it says that ion exchange resins are worn out by metals, implying that

purigen does not absorb any metals

. Furthermore it says that it ignores simple elements, having negligible effect on trace minerals.

Should you use activated carbon in a planted aquarium?

Is activated carbon necessary in most planted tanks ?

No, but it can be useful in setups to capture small organic waste particles or tannins

. Purigen is a good alternative as it can be recharged (with bleach) and reused.

Will Purigen lower nitrates?

A: Purigen® will remove organics before they can be converted by bacteria into ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, resulting in

lowered nitrate concentrations over time

, but it will not directly remove these chemicals from the water.

Does Purigen remove phosphates?

Purigen will not remove phosphates

. It removes nitrogenous waste, not including ammonia, which I believe in this case is urea and potentially other compounds.

How often should I change purigen?

Seriously, once it purigen starts getting discolored, heading to brown, then you know it is time to recharge. I normally will change my CPE

every 4-6 months

. Depends on test results.

How many times can you regenerate purigen?

Being able to clean (regenerate, or recharge) this media and put it back into use is a major positive that I discussed in my Seachem Purigen Review. Their literature states that it can be regenerated

up to 10 times

.

Does purigen lower TDS?

Purigen will help remove organic dissolved solids. But since you’re problem is hard water, then RODI is a solution, albeit an expensive one, and that’s why I suggested keeping African Cichlids. No it won’t…but

it will help lower TDS

. Purigen will help remove organic dissolved solids.

Will Purigen remove ammonia?

Purigen® works by intercepting the organic waste before it can be turned into ammonia, but

it is incapable of removing waste once it has entered the nitrogen cycle

(it cannot directly remove ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate).

Where do you put Purigen in sump?

Ideally,

your Purigen container bag should be large enough to cover the entire area of the chamber, or as much of it as is possible

. Third chamber would seem to the best one to trap all the fine particulate that makes it through the rest of the sump.

How do you use Purigen in a small tank?

Does carbon remove tannins from aquarium?

Long championed by those who love crystal clear water without any colors or visible impurities,

activated carbon does a remarkable job removing organic compounds, acids, and in particular, two substances which accumulate in water- phenols (decidedly nasty substances), and tannins

, which….

Does a carbon filter remove tannins?

Activated carbon water filters are another option for removing natural compounds such as tannins

and improving overall water quality.

Will Purigen remove tannins?

Is Purigen harmful to fish?

Yes! Purigen® exclusively removes organic waste from the water and does not release anything in its place, so

if is perfectly fine to use Purigen® in any type of aquarium and with any type of fish.

How do you rinse Purigen?

Can you put too much carbon in a fish tank?

Yes, if your aquarium has too much CO2 i.e. CO2 levels more than 30 PPM then it is toxic for your fish

. This is because if your aquarium has too much CO2 it reduces the ability of fish to take oxygen in and your fish will struggle to get oxygen. This will suffocate the fish and it can even cause death.

Can you have too much activated carbon in aquarium?

Why is it important not to place your carbon filter too early?

It’s essential to get carbon in the right place in the filter as well. If it is placed too early then

it runs the risk of becoming biologically active

; that is to say that it will start to get smothered in nitrifying bacteria. If that happens, you lose surface area on the carbon and it becomes redundant.

Can you use Purigen with API stress coat?

I just ordered some Purigen after doing a bit of research. This product is

not to be used with any water conditions that contain slime coat

such as Stress Coat, Aqua Safe and several others.

How do you use active carbon in an aquarium?

What does Purigen do for aquarium?

Purigen

controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds

. Purigen’s impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity.

How much carbon do I need for a 75 gallon reef?

The general consensus here is that a quantity of about

3 level tablespoons of carbon per 50 gallons of actual tank water volume

should be sufficient to keep a saltwater aquarium or reef tank system color free.

Is SeaChem Purigen chemical filtration?

Note SeaChem specifically says

Purigen is not a chemical filtration media

. But Purigen does remove dyes and tannic acid, which means it IS a chemical filtration media.

Does activated carbon raise pH?

Summary: Though its popularity as a water treatment alternative is increasing,

activated carbon can have a substantial effect on pH

. These “spikes” in pH become even more pronounced in various high-purity applications.
