While ich may be the most common disease in aquarium fish,
it does not have to infect your tank
.
How is ick transferred?
Life cycle of ICH
Ichthyophthirius multifiliis is a pro- tozoan parasite that
usually is transmitted into a pond by a car- rier fish, other animals, or man
. It can be pumped into a pond from a river or stream used as a water source for the pond.
How do I clean my tank after ICH?
Drain the aquarium of water and refill it. Restart the fish tank filters and add a little household ammonia to feed the biological filter — just enough to reach 0.5 ppm using an ammonia test kit. Raise the fish aquarium water temperature to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Let the aquarium run for about 10 days.
How does ICH get into a tank?
Ich (Ichthyopthirius multifiliis), also known as White Spot Disease, is actually a parasite which can be transmitted to your tank
from equipment, plants, or stock that is carrying the parasite
, even without showing symptoms. Some in the fish keeping community even believe ich is present in any tank that holds fish.
Can ick go away on its own?
It is a natural part of the lifecycle of ich to drop off of the host for a while (hence the “success” of snake oil cures), but
it won’t go away
. It will still be present in the system and may or may not re-establish a visible infection. The fish will likely always maintain at least a low level infection though.
What does ICH look like in the tank?
Ich is one of the most common diseases encountered in tropical-fish aquariums. Its signs include the presence of
small white spots resembling a sprinkle of salt grains on the body and gills
, frequent scraping of the body against objects in the environment, loss of appetite, and abnormal hiding behaviour.
Can white spots spread to other fish?
First,
dropsy is not contagious
. However, if one fish does become affected, other fish in the same fish aquarium — particularly those of the same species — could also be at risk. In such cases, the fish become affected one by one, until there’s no more of that species left (or the causative issue gets resolved).
How fast can ick spread?
Parasites can reproduce rapidly, and one mature ich trophont can produce several hundreds to thousands of infective theronts in
less than 24 hours
at a water temperature of 22° to 25oC (72o to 77oF).
Why do my fish keep getting Ich?
Common triggers for the onset of Ich are
a sudden drop in temperature caused by heater malfunction or adding cold water during a water change or introducing new fish
.
Is Ich contagious?
The disease is
highly contagious
and spreads rapidly from one fish to another. It can be particu- larly severe when fish are crowded. While many protozoans reproduce by simple division, a single “Ich” organism can multiply into hundreds of new parasites.
How do you clean a fish tank without removing the fish?
Can I feed my fish while treating Ich?
Generally,
it is fine to feed fish whilst they are undergoing a course of treatment, as long as they are still eating
.
What are the white spots on my fish tank glass?
If you’ve ever noticed a white residue forming on the top of your glass tank, you’re probably seeing the result of the
evaporation of hard water
. The residue left behind is likely a lime (calcium carbonate plus additional ions) build-up on the glass called “limescale.”
Is Ich always in your tank?
Nope, ich is ALWAYS present regardless of qt
. If you have a fish, you have ich.
Can fish naturally fight off Ich?
Yes, they can fight it off on their own
…and become resistant to it. The tank has to be established though. Ich in a healthy tank is usually caused by temp.
How long till Ich falls off fish?
Typically you see Ich on your fish (like small grains of sand) for
2 days
then it falls off. In my experience it comes back in about 6-8 days and is exponentially worse the second time around. The second or third infestation is when many fish are lost because there are so many parasites that the fish can’t survive.
What temp kills Ich?
Part of a proven ich treatment plan is to elevate the hospital/quarantine tank’s temperature to
80F (27C)
to speed the disease through its lifecycle.
What is stress Ich in fish?
Disease: Ich, characterized by
white spots on the body of a fish

a dropsy-like appearance
, reproductive problems and a host of secondary infections.
Can fish recover from white spot?
Controlling stress factors is key to preventing outbreaks and the recovery of your fish.
The white spots you see on the fish is the mature stage of the parasites life cycle and will not be directly affected by treatment
. White spot treatments require two doses to catch the parasites at their most delicate stage.
Can water changes cure ich?
While you are turning up the temperature it’s time to start your daily water changes. Yes, I said daily. Because
it’s easiest to kill the Ick when it is in the aquarium and not on the fish
it’s important to take as much water out of the aquarium (and therefore as much Ick) as possible every day.
