How long does an MRI take?
Most types of MRIs take about
15 to 90 minutes
to complete. In some cases, your MRI might be shorter or longer. The part of your body getting scanned and the number of images needed to play a role in determining how long the MRI will take.
Can I drink water before MRI with contrast?
You should not eat or drink anything 4 hours prior to your exam time. You may take your medications with a small sip of water if needed.
The day before your exam drink plenty of water so you are well hydrated
. Being hydrated will ease the discomfort for those receiving contrast.
Can you open your eyes during MRI?
You may experience fear, or if you suffer from anxiety, you may feel claustrophobic inside the MRI machine.
It helps to close your eyes before going in and keep them closed
. Try to think of amusing things — or about people or pets you love.
Do you leave your clothes on for an MRI?
We will provide safe and comfortable clothing to wear for your exam
. We also encourage you to avoid wearing clothing items that indicate the use of “coolmax” or “silver technology” for your exam. These terms typically indicate the use of metal threads.
Can you wear a scarf during MRI?
This will help us prepare and provide MR Safe frames with your specific lenses so that you can view items presented on the projector screen within the scanner)
If you have hair extensions or wear a wig, hair piece, or head covering (i.e., headband, cap, scarf, barrettes, etc.)
Can you use deodorant before an MRI?
Can you put on deodorant for an MRI?
Please refrain from wearing any powder, perfumes, deodorant and/or lotions on your underarms and breasts prior to the procedure
. Since the MRI is a magnet, please let us know if you have any metal in or on your body.
Can you wear sweatpants in an MRI?
Please wear comfortable clothing. Cotton, polyester, and wool are best.
Don’t worry about the snaps or zippers on pants, as that metal can be allowed into the scanning facility

What drug do they give you before an MRI?
Oral Benzodiazepines
Many patients find that an oral benzodiazepine, such as Xanax, Ativan, or Valium, taken prior to the exam sufficiently relieves their anxiety and allows them to complete an MRI with relative ease.
Can I drive home after MRI with contrast?
Most patients do not require sedation and therefore are able to drive immediately after the exam
. If you need a sedative to help you relax for the exam, please arrange for a friend or relative to drive you home.
Is it normal to be tired after an MRI?
You won’t have pain from the magnetic field or radio waves used for the MRI test.
You may be tired or sore from lying in one position for a long time
. If a contrast material is used, you may feel some coolness when it is put into your IV.
Why was my MRI painful?
If you notice any pain, redness, and/or swelling at the IV site after you return home following your procedure, you should notify your physician as this
could indicate an infection or another type of reaction
. Otherwise, there is no special type of care required after an MRI scan of the bones, joints, and soft tissues.
Can you eat before an MRI on your back?
There’s no need to go without food or water for an MRI.
Eat breakfast as you normally would
. Avoid wearing jewelry, makeup, or clothing with metal buttons or snaps. If you do wear clothing that has metal, such as an underwire bra, you will be asked to change into a gown.
Can you drink the night before an MRI?
Patient should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before
. Arrive one hour early before scan.
Can you sleep during an MRI?
Sedation. It is reasonably common for some people to require a light sedative to help them relax during their MRI scan.
This medicine will not put you to sleep
. Instead, it will just relax you enough to control your nerves and be comfortable enough to tolerate the scan.
Can you see a tampon on MRI?
On imaging, the vaginal tampon takes the shape and orientation of the vaginal canal and resembles air in attenuation, because of the gas between the fibers.
Occasionally, the string of the tampon may also be seen
. Radiologists need to recognize a vaginal tampon, to not get confused with a pathology (21, 22).
Can you wear a sleep mask during MRI?

For many patients, the moment they realize they are uncomfortable in an MRI scan is when they look up and see that they are in an enclosed space. To prevent this,
wear a sleeping mask over your eyes so you won’t be able to look around and worry about the space you are in
.
Can I wear socks during MRI?
Various clothing items such as athletic wear (e.g., yoga pants, shirts, etc.), socks, braces, and others
may contain metallic threads or metal-based anti-bacterial compounds that may pose a hazard
. These items can heat up and burn the patient during an MRI.
Do I have to wear a mask in the MRI machine?
The FDA recommends patients wear face masks with no metal during MRIs
. The FDA recently received a report that a patient’s face was burned from the metal in a face mask worn during an MRI. The FDA reminds patients and providers that patients should not wear any metal during an MRI.
Does your whole body go in for a head MRI?
Your whole body does not go in the machine
, only the half or part that needs to be scanned. One thing you’ll need to know is that the machine is noisy. It makes a lot of different noises, and some of them are extremely loud. Some patients say it sounds like a sledgehammer.
Can your hair be wet during an MRI?
Avoid wearing mascara (can contain metal flakes), hair gel and wet hair.
Water in hair can throw off magnet signal
. Make sure you know where you are going to meet the experimenter and what time you are expected to show up. For a map of Dept.
Do you need clean hair for an MRI?
Unless you’re told otherwise,
you can shower and wash your hair the morning of your MRI
. Don’t use any hair products (such as hair spray or hair gel). Don’t wear any metal objects. Remove all jewelry, including body piercings.
Can you have bobby pins in your hair during an MRI?
No metallic objects can be in the MRI room because the MRI uses a large magnet. All metal jewelry and watches must be removed.
Many hair products or attachable hair weaves contain magnetic particles and they must be removed
– hair clips, ties, or pins that have metal in them.
Can you have an MRI if you have fillings in your teeth?
Braces, retainers or dental fillings
Most metal tooth fillings or other permanent dental implants won’t cause a problem
. If you have detachable metal braces or a retainer, you should take them out before you get an MRI.
What should I do the day before my MRI?
Before an MRI exam,
eat normally and continue to take your usual medications
, unless otherwise instructed. You will typically be asked to change into a gown and to remove things that might affect the magnetic imaging, such as: Jewelry. Hairpins.
Do you need to remove wedding ring for MRI?
Can I keep my jewelry, ear or body piercings in during my exam? It depends.
All ferrous metals (ie stainless steel) must be removed prior to entering the MRI exam room
. If you are aren’t sure if your jewelry contains ferrous metals, you can use a magnet at home and test in on your own.
