Many of the best hikes are found on the southwest shore, near the city of South Lake Tahoe . Hikes running along the lake offer beautiful scenery, with little elevation gain and level terrain. These are favorites with families.
The best time to hike the Tahoe Rim Trail is late summer through early fall . The reason for this compressed time frame is the high levels of snowfall the Sierra Nevada typically receive.
To protect natural resources and provide for public safety, the Tahoe National Forest has revised fire restrictions and implemented a new, temporary closure order on dispersed camping and target shooting effective Thursday September 16, 2021 at 12:00 AM through November 1, 2021.

1. Emerald Point Trail : Emerald Bay Hike, Lake Tahoe. Emerald Bay is a South Lake Tahoe icon and it offers some of the best hikes in Lake Tahoe. There are several Emerald Bay hikes and the Jaunt out to Emerald Point is one of the most beautiful.
Permits are required year-round for both day and overnight use in most of the wilderness areas . The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit manages Meiss Country roadless area and shares management duties of Desolation Wilderness with the Eldorado National Forest, and the Mt.
Both the Nevada and California side of Tahoe South are open to travelers . Businesses are operating at 100 percent capacity with no social distancing restrictions.
Desolation Wilderness is now open for overnight and day use , however several popular trailheads remain closed due to damage sustained from the Caldor Fire and ongoing suppression repair and recovery operations.
The Rubicon Trail parking area is located in the D.L. Bliss State Park on CA-89, approximately 2.5 miles north of the Vikinsholm parking area . Notes: Remember to park one car at the Rubicon Trail parking area and one at the Vikingsholm Parking Area. You can also use public transportation.

You can sometimes bypass the quota system as a Tahoe Rim Trail thru-hiker; contact the Forest Service Supervisor’s Office for more information. The permit itself costs $5 per person for the 1st night, and $10 per person for 2-14 nights, plus a $10 campsite reservation fee .

Bikes are welcome on the majority of the Tahoe Rim Trail, but they are prohibited by federal law from Desolation, Granite Chief and Mount Rose Wilderness Areas .
Use Regulations
Like most trails in the Tahoe Basin, the Tahoe Rim Trail is dog-friendly . The regulations affecting you and your dog vary depending on the agency that manages that stretch of the trail. Dogs on the trail should be kept leashed around other trail users, at trailheads, and on steep or slippery terrain.
Tahoe has some of the most beautiful hikes – especially during early Spring while there’s still snow on the ground and the weather is warming up. I’d recommend having a pair of snowshoes on hand so you can easily strap those puppies on and discover Tahoe at entirely new heights. A few of my favorite places to hike: Mt.
Heavenly features three handsome hiking trails , varying in mileage and degrees of difficulty, and each departs from the top of Heavenly Gondola’s Adventure Peak. The trails include beginning, intermediate, and advanced options, and each is sure to bring you exercise and picture perfect scenery.
So, wear layers. A t-shirt, hoodie/long sleeve shirt, and jacket are good. Once the sun dips behind the mountain tops, the temperatures fall fast. Carry a lightweight backpack to hold those layers while hiking Lake Tahoe, so you don’t lose things!
We also strongly recommend carrying a bear canister in Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe . If you’re hiking the entire John Muir Trail, that’s the entire way. ALL of your food and scented items must be in the canister once you make camp.
Bear proofing of all smellables (food, hygiene products, etc.) is required on the Tahoe Rim Trail . The preferred and most successful method is to utilize a bear canister.
