What should you not use Scotchgard on?
In general, ScotchgardTM Fabric Crafts Water Shieldcan be used on cotton, polyester, silk, wool, acrylic, nylon, and most other washable fabrics. Do not use on
“X” coded fabric
(fabric that cannot be cleaned with water or solvents). You can find this code on the tag sewn into your fabric item.
Should you Scotchgard a new tent?
This could mean that water is seeping in through the seams or that you notice peeling on the inside of the tent. If in doubt, adding some extra waterproofing won’t hurt the tent, so
we always recommend playing it conservatively and waterproofing your tent whenever it starts to show signs of failure

then proofing it every couple of years should make sure it maintains it’s waterproofness. If you’re willing to play it by ear, just wait until it starts to leak, then do it!
Is there anything better than Scotchgard?

, which is similar to Scotchgard but made with gentler ingredients. She says it’s the leading choice for green furniture protection because it’s silicone free, fluorocarbon free, and safe for everything from suede to microfiber.
How long does Scotchgard take to dry on a tent?
When it’s colder or more humid, it might take longer for your surfaces to dry. Ventilating the area by opening windows, using a fan, or applying the product outdoors will help ScotchgardTM Heavy Duty Water Shield dry faster. If you’re just drying between coats,
