Can Navy SEALs be officers?
Each year, Naval Special Warfare Command selects between 70 to 90 men to attend SEAL training as officers
. Because there are so few available officer slots, competition is extremely intense.
A Navy SEAL Officer is an Unrestricted Line Officer in the Navy
who leads the most elite warriors in the world – the Navy SEAL teams. The designator code for Navy SEAL Officer is 1130.
The majority of Navy SEALs (about 2,000) are
Navy Enlisted personnel
(E-4 to E-9). They are led by roughly 500 SEAL Officers (O-1 to O-10). There is also a small number of SEAL Warrant Officers (circa 30) who rank as officers above the senior-most Enlisted but lower than an Officer (O-1).
Can an officer become a SEAL?
A student can attend as an enlisted or officer. In fact, both attend the same training together, where your Special Warfare reputation begins to form. Although there are several routes to get to BUD/S,
there is only one way to become a SEAL, and that is through BUD/S.
There are
2,450 active duty SEALs
, (just 1% of all Navy personnel), and 600 active duty SWCC. These forces spearhead our global maritime security worldwide. NSW reserves number 325 SEALs, 125 SWCC, and 775 support personnel.
The board consists of
one Navy SEAL Captain
and at least three other SEAL Officers in grades Lieutenant through Commander.
Graduate from the Naval Academy
(midshipmen would have to also pass a week-long mini-BUD/s to qualify from this route). Graduate from an accredited university’s Naval Reserve Officer Training Program (NROTC). Graduate from the Navy’s Officer Candidate School (OCS). Lateral transfer from another service.
The numbers are so unfavorable
because of the rigorous training that aspiring SEALs and SWCC candidates go through
. The training comes in both mental and physical stages that begin with two months of intense physical training. After that, they must pass a physical screening at the first stage or face being eliminated.

To become a Navy SEAL, you must be an active-duty member of the U.S. Navy and a U.S. citizen who can read, write and speak English fluently.

Why is there no SEAL Team 9?

Is it better to go enlisted or officer?
