NOTE: As of 2020, the Navy will make a few changes in the physical fitness assessment (PFA). Sailors no longer will be doing crunches for two minutes, and there will be a change to the way push-ups are done. Also, on the option list,
a bike or rowing test can replace the running test
.
1, 2018, the service will implement an initial run test that all recruits will have to pass in order to begin recruit training. A mile and a half will have to be covered, for men, in
under 16 minutes and 10 seconds, and under 18 minutes and 7 seconds for women
, the Navy said.
In order to graduate from Navy basic training, you must score at least a “Good (Low)” score on the normal Navy Physical Readiness Test (PRT). For men age 17 through 19, that means 62 sit-ups, 51 push-ups and running 1.5 miles in
11 minutes
.
Navy SWCC fitness test
500-yard swim: The maximum time allowed is 13 minutes.
Push-ups: You must complete at least 50 push-ups in two minutes. Sit-ups: You must complete at least 50 sit-ups in two minutes. Pull-ups: You must complete at least six pull-ups without touching the ground or letting go of the bar.
The PRT has three events: curl-ups, push-ups and a 1.5 mile timed run. The alternate cardio options to the 1.5 mile outdoor run/walk include the following: a timed 500-yard swim,
12-minute stationary cycle
, or 1.5 mile run/walk on a treadmill. Alternate cardio is permitted at the discretion of your commanding officer.
Officers could be processed for separation — or retirement if they’re eligible — after
two consecutive failures
.
Sailors wishing to pursue a career in naval special operations such as SEAL, Surface Warfare Combat Crewman or Explosive Ordinance Disposal are held to a much higher fitness standard. Due to the large amount of upper-body strength required in these fields,
pull-ups are required
.
Whether you’re a skilled swimmer or have never swum a stroke,
you’re welcome in the Navy
. Part of Navy boot camp is the swim test. Many Sailors join the Navy without knowing how to swim, but instructors at boot camp are trained to teach you everything you’ll need to know before the test.
Are Navy officers allowed to have tattoos?
Yes, the new Navy tattoo policy grants the same privileges to officers as enlisted personnel
. Therefore, Navy officers are allowed to have tattoos that extend below the elbow or knee, places on the body that were previously restricted prior to the updated policy.
So, as PRT season gets underway next month, sailors will be expected to plank — it’s replacing the sit-up—but
that score won’t count as part of their PRT score
, Nowell explained. Instead, Big Navy will collect the plank scores for this round to help ensure their scoring tables are accurate.
A good performance on this test likely will require
2-4 minutes
of flawless planking. To max the Marine Corps plank option, you have to do it for four minutes.
Females must complete
17 push-ups
and finish the 1.5-mile run in 15.5 minutes or less. As sailors age, the number of required push-ups continues to decreases for each age group.

The first three weeks of Navy Boot Camp are clearly the toughest (physically, and stressfully)
. Get through the first three weeks, and you’ll almost assuredly graduate. As with Army and Air Force Basic Training, during the first couple of weeks, you’ll find that no one can seem to do anything right.

Grading the PRT.
The PRT is passed when a Sailor achieves a score of probationary or higher performance standard on the PRT modalities
(Push-ups, forearm plank and one cardio or alternate cardio event. Failure to so, will result in a PRT failure.
The test and its standards can be used by new recruits and currently serving sailors to determine how close they are to meet Navy standards by age group. In general,
those taking the PRT must score a minimum of “Satisfactory-Medium” in order to “pass”
.
If you fail to meet the height/weight standards as well as abdominal circumference measurement, then
you will undergo further screening to determine your body fat percentage
. For men, you need not to exceed 23% body fat. This figure is arrived at after taking abdomen measurements and neck measurements.
If the BCA component is failed
the member will acquire a PFA failure for that cycle and is required to be cleared by medical to participate in the PRT component
. In the event a medical waiver is granted for all or part of the PRT, the member must pass all of the non-waived events to pass the PFA.
If an enlisted Sailor fails
two or more consecutive PFAs
, they will continue service until their SEAOS. These Sailors will be ineligible for advancement, reenlistment or extension, receive an adverse report that states significant problems on evaluations and detailed as required.
Compared to enlisted service members with the same amount of experience, military officers make considerably more money. A freshly commissioned O-1 — 2nd Lt. (Army/Marine Corps/Air Force), Ensign (Navy) — earns
$3,188 per month in base pay alone
.
Your first week of training consists of
processing days
(P-Days). This period lasts for approximately five days, but can run a little longer depending on weekends, holidays and the schedule of arriving Recruits.
Candidates willing to apply for the post of Tradesman in the Indian Navy
should not be less than 18 years of age
. The maximum age of the applicant should not be over 25 years. Reserved category candidates will be given relaxation in the maximum age limit as per government rules.
The oldest you can be to enlist for active duty in each branch is: Coast Guard: 31. Marines: 28. Navy:
39

How hard is the test? The Third-Class Navy Swim Test is
really straightforward to pass so long as you are already comfortable in the water
