Climbing the hidden steps to Coit Tower is one of our favorite things to do in San Francisco

. It doesn’t take very long to do, doubles as exercise, and is a great way to see the city. Plus, the kids love it!

Is it worth going up Coit Tower?

It costs $7 to go up the tower and the views from the top over San Francisco Bay are undoubtedly impressive. However in retrospect (

having made it up there on foot I was determined to make it worth the effort

) I could have enjoyed pretty much the same views from the top of Telegraph Hill itself for no charge.

Are there stairs in Coit Tower?


There are 2 sets of stairs for Coit Tower on Sansome St

. The first set is at Greenwich and the second is at Filbert. The Filbert steps are a little deeper per step and are mostly wood and concrete. The Greenwich steps are a little tougher because of the shallower, brick stairs as you get toward the top.
