CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) — After more than a year of construction, you can again walk and bike across the south side of the Ben Franklin Bridge . Crews spent the past 15 months installing a new ADA compliant ramp, which opened Tuesday morning.
The walkway is open daily from 6 a.m – 8 p.m. October 1 – April 30 and 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. May 1 – September 30 .
Across the Ben Franklin Bridge – Run to New Jersey and back via the bridge’s pedestrian path which can be accessed via 5th and Race Streets. It’s a three-mile round trip journey offering stunning views of the Delaware River and the Philadelphia skyline, particularly at sunrise or sunset.
The heavily used Benjamin Franklin, Walt Whitman and Tacony-Palmyra Bridges across the Delaware River are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete, according to data Pennsylvania officials released yesterday. The bridges remain safe , officials stressed.
The PATCO Speedline train travels over the Ben Franklin Bridge while passengers enjoy a beautiful view when traveling from Philadelphia to New Jersey.
When opened it opened in 1926, the bridge held the title of world’s longest suspension bridge . It is currently the 57th longest. The Ben Franklin Bridge is a popular image in film.
You can’t walk across the Walt Whitman Bridge . You can only walk across the Ben Franklin Bridge.

PennDOT has notified the University of Pennsylvania that the Chestnut Street Bridge will close for renovation on Monday, August 5, 2019. The bridge will be closed to ALL TRAFFIC, including pedestrians, bicycles, and cars, for approximately one year.

The depth of the Delaware drops from about 5 feet to 30 in a short distance from the shore — and if you wade out that far, you’ll find yourself up against some pretty strong currents.

The four-year -long project cost $90 million and eight lives. The American Institute of Steel Construction bestowed on the Walt Whitman Bridge the honor of “Most Beautiful Structure of Steel of 1957.”
In 1956, recognizing the beauty and wonder of the span, it was renamed for Ben Franklin . The bridge was designed by Paul Philippe Cret, the architect who was also in large part responsible for Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
A great place to see some history and just walk around to take in the scenery . A lot of open space, which is nice for running or bike riding. They have a short guided tour as well, which is certainly worth the 30 minutes it takes to finish, so I highly recommend it.
