How It Started.
Josiah Chase
(1840 to 1928) , a conservationist and former State Legislator, retired to York, Maine and bought a 20-acre strip of land extending “…from Perkins Cove to Israel Head.” Three years before his death in 1928, at age 88, Chase ceded the magnificent Marginal Way to the Town.
What does the name Ogunquit mean?
The word Ogunquit in the Abenaki language literally means “

Is York Cliff walk open?
We have hiked the Cliff Walk countless times, but keep in mind that it is
closed now because of COVID restrictions
. You can still walk on the beach and walk in the Hartley Mason Reserve park. It is a gorgeous and very easy walk, so do not miss it after reopening.
Is Perkins Cove open in the winter?
A lot of the shops and restaurants are closed over the winter, but there were a few open
. Great place to park and walk along the beautiful Marginal Way. Wear a coat if taking a walk even on a warm winter day it can be cold along the water.
What is there to do in Ogunquit Maine in the winter?

Take to the downhill slopes of Powderhouse Hill, ski the trails of Harris Farm, or snowshoe your way through the woods of Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region or the Wells Estuarine Reserve, which also offers guided winter treks.
