Recruit Training Command (RTC), the Navy's enlisted boot camp
, has extended the duration of its basic military training (BMT) program from eight to 10 weeks.
MILITARY TRAINING
RTC will prepare you for life in the Navy. Your first week will be taken up by medical, dental and administration screenings.
This processing week – or P-Days – will fly by as you are ready for your training to start
.
U.S. Navy basic training is an intense, eight-week program where recruits endure physical training and must develop emotional endurance
. Also, recruits attend classes where they engage with relevant coursework and also receive practical training that allows hands-on experience and prepares them for real-life scenarios.
Across Branches of the Military
The Navy, Army, and Marines have recruits drop out at roughly the same rate as each other,
between 11 and 14 percent annually
. Contrary to what many think, the goal of officers in basic training isn't just to push recruits to drop out.
The Navy offers a very few
two year and three year
contracts, where the recruit spends two or three years on active duty, followed by six years in the Active Reserves. The other services offer four, five, and six year enlistment options (The Air Force only offers four and six year enlistments).
Yes, it is possible to fail basic training
. You could go through the trouble of leaving your home, job, family and friends and come back a failure. In fact, this happens to about 15% of recruits who join the military every year. Too many recruits I speak to think that it is impossible to fail basic training.
Navy boot camp lengthened to
10 weeks
to prepare recruits for life in the fleet. The Navy is adding more mentorship, life skills and personal and professional development to its boot camp curriculum as it expands recruit training to 10 weeks — up from eight.
Enlisted recruits head off to Boot Camp at the
Great Lakes Naval Training Center north of Chicago, Illinois
, near the western shore of Lake Michigan. While it's called Boot Camp, it's really a huge campus that includes both classroom and lots of hands-on training.
You'll get up at
5 a.m.
every single day. Waking up in the morning is an adjustment process that's the same for every single basic training class. When you first arrive, the drill instructors require a lot of noise, yelling and jostling to get everyone out of the rack.
Do Sailors Get Leave After Navy Boot Camp? After Navy boot-camp graduation,
sailors will not be given leave and are required to travel to their next training location, A School
. There are many locations for Navy A School, and not all sailors will go to the same school.
Navy Boot Camp First Phone Call
At RTC Great Lakes, all recruits are allowed a ten-second call to let their family know they have arrived.
Recruits that still have a cell phone make the call from their personal phone; others use telephones provided by the Navy
.
Getting into the Navy is
not an easy task
. Aside from medical and physical standards, there are height and weight standards, criminal standards, as well as academic standards. The Navy requires a minimum ASVAB score of 35 to enlist in the regular Navy.
Will I lose my job if I go to basic training?
No, by law all companies have to provide you with the required time off for military obligation provided that you supply them with a copy of your orders for the weekend drill or 2 week drill. They also have to save your job for you so that way you have your job upon returning.
What happens if you fail boot camp?
Recruits who don't pass their initial run will get another chance within 48 hours. But if they fail that,
they'll be sent home with an ELS, an entry-level separation from the Navy that will require them to get a waiver if they want to try and enlist again
.
Can you quit boot camp?
After you arrive at boot camp, your fate still isn't sealed. Even though you're now on active duty,
Army command can let you go without penalty during your first 180 days of service
. The official term for this is entry-level separation. Boot camp is the best time because the Army has just started training you.
Specific underway schedules can vary widely. Normally ships will go to sea for 10 days to 2 weeks each month for training operations in preparation for deployment. Extended operations away from home port can last up to 6 to 9 months, and ships typically deploy
once every 18-24 months
.
Do you go to jail if you quit the military?
Attempted desertion also is charged as a military crime, as long as the attempt went beyond mere preparation
. Desertion carries a maximum punishment of dishonorable discharge, forfeiture of all pay, and confinement of five years.
If you went through all the motions of signing up for a military service only to decide it is not right for you and you have NOT been to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and have NOT taken an Oath of Enlistment,
you are free to quit the process at any time
.

The Navy.
The Navy is probably the best place for those who like to travel
. There are only a few ratings (jobs) in the Navy that won't spend a significant amount of time at sea. This might be great if you are single, but might be something you'll want to think about if you have a family.
If you decide to enlist,
you will report to a military entrance processing station (MEPS)
. You'll spend a day or two completing pre-enlistment steps. These include taking the ASVAB, having a physical exam, meeting with a career counselor, and if you're accepted, taking the oath of enlistment.
