Most recruits today join the military through the DEP. This means that you sign a contract, sometimes while still in high school, promising to enlist in the military at some future date, up to one year away. While in the DEP,
you are actually an untrained member of the non-drilling Reserve component of the military.
How long after you swear in do you go to bootcamp?
Once you have completed all of the testing requirements, have determined your career path and have taken the oath of enlistment, you are ready for basic training. You report for
10 week basic training, either directly or within a year

Can family watch you swear in?
Members of your family are welcome to watch you take the oath
. A waiting room is available for them. Your family may take photographs of you with the military officer administering the oath.
What happens if you don't swear in at MEPS?

If you have NOT been to the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and have NOT taken an Oath of Enlistment,
you are free to quit the process at any time
. Just because you arrive at MEPS does not mean you are fully committed with no chance of deciding not to commit after all.
Do I swear in at MEPS?
At MEPS, you will take the ASVAB, choose your MOS and take a physical.
If you pass the ASVAB and physical, you will be able to swear into the military on that same day
. When going to MEPS, it should take a couple of days to get through all the paperwork.

. The CAT-ASVAB software adjusts to your ability level and administers questions that are best suited for you. If you are above average ability, you will receive questions that are above average difficulty.
What do you wear when you swear in?

(not blue jeans or t-shirt as an outergarment). Tie is optional, sport coat (blazer style) is optional but a nice touch. shoes & belt should be leather & should match, socks are required and (obviously) should match the clothes and each other.
