Water bottles are preferred by most owners and experts as the best way to provide clean, fresh water to guinea pigs . However, water bowls are a safe alternative if your guinea pig is elderly, injured, or simply dislikes using water bottles.
Why is this better? The simple answer is that the guinea pig has access to more of the nozzle . You may have a piggy that politely licks the end (and appears to chew the water) in which case your piggy can probably use any setup of the bottle.
Guinea pigs may spit food into the tube while drinking, displacing the ball and causing the bottle to leak .
The best height is just above head height , so that when they look up the end of the spout is level with their mouth. Obviously if you have different-sized guinea pigs (such as a sow and her babies), you’ll need to find a position that’s comfortable for all of them, or give them two bottles at different levels.
A healthy guinea pig may be able to survive up to 24 hours without water, but they will be dehydrated after that time. Furthermore, it is possible that the resulting dehydration can cause semi-permanent or even permanent damage to the guinea pig’s health.
An ill guinea pig may not drink enough water on its own to do well. Your guinea pig may be dehydrated if you see any of these problems: thick sticky saliva, crusty eyes, poor appetite, small amounts of dark colored urine, or hard dry fecal pellets .
Water bowls are safe for guinea pigs to use . As long as safety precautions are taken, water bowls are an excellent substitute for water bottles. In fact, some guinea pigs prefer bowls to water bottles.
Guinea pigs need water! Even if they’re not drinking it, you should refresh their water every few days . You never know when a thirst will take them. Like all animals, guinea pigs should always have fresh, clean water to drink.
Because some guinea pigs poop more than others, it’s not that easy to say how much they should poop in a day. What we can tell you, however, is that it’s a lot. Healthy piggies can poop up to 100 times in one day , which means you might be cleaning the hutch out three or four times a day.
Water Bottles
The most common and best way of providing your guinea pigs with fresh water is by using a water bottle. These simply clip onto the side of their cage, and have a little drinking spout that pokes through.
We recommend TWO bottles per cage
We highly recommend two water bottles per cage, even when you only have just one guinea pig. It’s not worth a few bucks to have your pig going thirsty and you don’t realize it.
It depends on the guins . I always have two food bowls and two water bottles for my pairs. I have one pair that share a hay box nicely, but I have another pair that fight over it, so have two in their cage. I decide how many hiding places to put in according to cage size rather than the number of guineas.
Feed your guinea pig on a consistent schedule, twice a day , morning and evening. Guinea pigs will overeat if given the chance, so, to prevent obesity, remove pelleted food that is left uneaten after one hour and discard fresh fruits or vegetables that are left uneaten after 24 hours.
kt1. Try a bowl of water for him, make sure that he can reach it. For the first few nights make sure the bottle is there, you don’t want to take it away and him not know how to use the bowl of course.
Wheeking is the sound a guinea pig makes when it is hungry so don’t be surprised if the wheek around the time you usually feed them or if they see you bringing some food.
