Getting your NHS number
When you register with a GP practice you’ll receive a letter with your NHS number
. If you are not able to find your NHS number, you can use the Find your NHS number service or contact your GP practice for help.
Your medical or Health and Social Care records are held at your GP surgery, in hospitals or health and social care facilities you’ve had any appointments or treatment at, or by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service. You can request a copy of your records, though there may be a cost.
Where can I get my HCN number?
You should also be able to find your NHS Number
on any letter or document you have received from the NHS, including prescriptions, test results, and hospital referral or appointment letters
. If you cannot find your NHS Number in these ways, you can ask your GP practice to help you.
Is my NHS Number on my EHIC card?
Everyone registered with the NHS in England and Wales has their own unique NHS Number.

. EHICs last five years, and you can apply to renew one up to six months before it’s due to expire.

You must apply to renew your Card as they are not reissued automatically when they expire
. You will need your old EHIC number and your PPS number. If you have changed address or your name, you will need to contact your Local Health Office.
What does a CHI number look like?
The current CHI number consists of
the 6 digit Date of Birth (DDMMYY) followed by a 3 digit sequence number and a check digit
. The ninth digit is always even for females and odd for males.

What do I do if I don’t have an NHS Number?
If you cannot find your NHS Number at home, you can
ask your GP practice to help you
. They should be able to provide the number for you as long as you are registered with them. To protect your privacy, you may be asked to show a passport, driving licence or some other proof of identity.
How long does it take to register with NHS?
Registering takes
around 15 minutes
. We’ll ask questions about: your name and address. the name and address of the GP practice you’re currently registered with, if you have one.
Is NHS free for foreigners?
Those who are not ordinarily resident in the UK, including former UK residents, are overseas visitors and may be charged for NHS services
. Treatment in A&E departments and at GP surgeries remains free for all.
