A 009 is mechanical advance and does not need a vacuum line. They are used primarily if you have a dual carb setup. There are newer distributors that have both vacuum and mechanical advance. The numbers on the side can be used to identify what you have but typically if it’s Bosch I think there are just 2 types of caps.

How do you remove the gear from a distributor drive?

You HAVE to set this distributor using a stroboscopic timing light at 28-32 degrees at 3000+rpm. The 009 distributors vary a lot from one to another (cheap build), and the maximum advance is more important than the idle advance. So you set the maximum advance and then let the idle timing fall where it may.

How do you set the timing on a 009 distributor?

The SVDA is a Single Vacuum, Dual Advance distributor with a vacuum advance for smooth acceleration off idle and a mechanical advance for higher RPM operation. The Ignitor Ignition module inside the flame thrower distributor ensures fast starts, better performance and economy and elimates the points and condensor.

What is a SVDA distributor?

Loosen the distributor enough to turn it. Start the car, squeeze the trigger on the light at idle, then start reving the motor up pretty high. You will see the timing changes as you rev it up to around 3000 rpm. When its reved up is the time to set the timing, set it around 28-30 degrees.

How do you time a VW bug with electronic ignition?

Pertronix ignition can be static timed in the same manner as points ignition. Set the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley to the desired static timing position. Connect a test light to the switched wire running from the coil to the distributor (the one that is not the power wire) and ground the test light.

How do I set the timing on my Pertronix?

Gone but never forgetten If a “pert” is a Pertronix Ignitor, yes, they have great reliability. The one in my son’s car has been in use for 4 years, the one in my daughter’s car for the 5 years we’ve owned the car, and who knows how long before us (it was in there when we bought it).

Do Pertronix igniters go bad?

The distributor cap sends the current to the rotor, which in turn sends it back to the distributor cap sepal plug wire terminals for each cylinder in a timed manner. The spark plug wires then carry the voltage to the spark plug where the current amps the gap, creating a spark inside the combustion chamber.

How does a Pertronix ignition system work?

How to… fit electronic ignition to your classic car

How do you install an electronic ignition?

A conversion to electronic ignition can be as simple as removing the old points and installing a new magnetic pickup in the distributor. Your car’s ignition system consists of two main components – the distributor and the ignition coil.

How do I convert my electronic ignition?

Check sticker on the backside of module “Ignitor by PerTronix” If the Sticker is shriveled up, wrinkled, cracked, or if you see any burn marks on that side of module the unit over heated and failed for various reasons. DO NOT USE SOLID CORE SPARK PLUG WIRES.
