Spacers are made of rubber bands or metal rings. Your orthodontist may place them between your molars during an appointment. Spacers
push your jaw forward by adding space at the back of your mouth
. They also make room for your braces if the back of your mouth is too tight to fit them properly.
How long do spacers hurt for?
Generally, this discomfort of spacers will fade as your teeth get used to the feeling of the spacers. Your teeth should stop hurting after

, but you might still feel the pressure of the orthodontic separators throughout the time they are between your teeth.
Do your teeth move with spacers?
Spacers are typically made out of rubber, are circular in size and quite small. Between one and twelve spacers may be placed, depending on the individual patient.

Is getting spacers painful?
When the spacers are first inserted, you may experience a little discomfort and pain, but they don’t hurt more than braces
. This is because only slight pressure is exerted and on a few teeth. If your teeth are more tightly packed together, spacers will hurt a little more.

You may eat normally with the separators in
, but we do recommend avoiding chewing gum and very sticky foods, like chewey/sticky candy (caramel, taffy, tootsie rolls, gummy bears, Snickers bars, and any other sticky candy), as they may make your separators fall out prematurely.
What color is best for braces?
- Choose gold, dark blue, pink, orange, turquoise, green, or violet to complement darker skin tones.
- Choose light blue, bronze, dark purple or subdued reds and pinks to complement lighter skin tones.
- Choose darker colors to make your teeth appear whiter.

What comes after spacers for braces?
If you had spacers placed, these will be
removed and replaced with the metal bands
. First, your orthodontist will slip on a few different band sizes to determine the best fit for your tooth. Once the band size has been determined, glue will be placed on the inside of the band and the band will be slid onto your tooth.
How are molar bands removed?
The band is gently pressed into position and a tool called a “bite stick” is placed over the band. You will be asked to bite down to push the band into place. Once the orthodontist has ensured that the sizing is correct, the bands will be removed. Your teeth will be polished, and the bands reapplied with dental cement.
How long are spacers in for?
The spacers stay between the teeth for
one to two weeks
and move the teeth apart slowly until they are far apart enough so that orthodontists can fit a tooth brace or molar band in between them or fit an expander with metal rings. Spacers are usually used to put spaces in between teeth before braces are established.
Can you get spacers and braces on the same day?
If you decide to move forward with getting braces,

How do you make spacers not hurt?
Avoid chewing gum or other sticky foods which can stick to the spacers and pull them out
. Avoid tough or crispy foods. Cold drinks or ice cream may help to temporarily alleviate any discomfort. Pain reliever such as Tylenol or Advil can provide relief for the pain if needed.
What happens if you swallow spacers?
What if My Spacers Fall Out? As the spacer completes its purpose, it may become loose and fall out on its own. If it happens less than two days before your next appointment, there is no need to worry unless you have been given other instructions. Even if you swallow the spacer,
there is no reason to be concerned

Does it hurt to get your expander out?
Will it hurt to take out a mouth expander? Most kids are scared of that appointment, not knowing what to expect. Even though the expander is glued in place,
your orthodontist has special instruments to dislodge and remove your expander without major discomfort
. All kids love getting the roof of their mouth back!
Why do they put spacers in before braces?
Before you get braces, your orthodontist will want to prepare your mouth for the best possible results. They may use orthodontic spacers
to make room for the brackets that will fix braces to your teeth

Can I eat pizza with braces?
You can still eat pizza when you have braces
, but it all comes down to the type of pizza. The best way to go is soft-crust pizza. Tougher crusts or thin crusts can damage your braces and get stuck between the wires, brackets and your teeth.
