about 13 minutes
and rotates three times. A ride on the old ferris wheel was only seven minutes and rotated once. The new gondolas have air conditioning and heating systems. This improvement allows you to comfortably ride the Centennial Wheel in Chicago's painfully cold winters and hot summers.
The gondolas are temperature controlled and have air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter
. The Wheel features special, high-tech safety glass to ensure the best climate inside and to prevent condensation.

The famous Centennial Wheel
spins year-round
from its perch at Navy Pier. In the wintertime, getting a birds-eye view of the city dusted with snow is nothing short of spectacular.
Named after designer George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., an engineer from Pittsburgh, Ferris brought the idea of the wheel to

. The wheel was 264 feet tall and illuminated by 2,500 Edison incandescent lights. The wheel was meant to rival the newly completed Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The new wheel will operate using the start/stop system
. The old wheel used the continuous rotation system, but the start/stop system is more efficient. The start/stop system will stop the wheel seven times to load six gondolas which then lets the wheel operator set a number of rotations for the wheel.
