To survive, head lice need to feed on blood several times a day. Without a host to feed on, head lice will die within
24 to 48 hours
. Viable (live) eggs are usually laid within 6mm from the scalp.

Off the host, adult head lice can live about two to four days at 74 degrees Fahrenheit (F) and one to two days at 86 degrees. Nits will remain alive off the host for
up to 10 days
; they will not hatch at or below room temperature (68 degrees F).
How long can lice eggs live on bedding?
Just like with mattresses, lice can only live on any bedding—whether it’s sheets, pillows, or comforters—for
1-2 days
. Without a human scalp as a source for food (blood) for longer than 1-2 days, lice cannot survive.

How can you tell lice eggs are dead?
When they are alive, nits are firmly attached to the hair follicle close to the scalp. When treating head lice, it may be difficult to tell whether the nit is still alive or if it has hatched. The simplest way to tell is by
looking at the color
— live and dead nits are brown while hatched nits are clear.
Does a nit comb get rid of eggs?
The number of sessions required depends on the last time you see lice:
The first combing session should remove all hatched head lice but does not remove eggs
. Therefore, lice that hatch from eggs after the first session may still be present.
How long can lice eggs live on furniture?
Adult lice can’t live longer than
24 hours or so
on nonhuman surfaces like carpets, hardwood floors, clothing, furniture, sports helmets, headphones, or hair accessories.
How do you keep lice eggs from hatching?
The only way to prevent them from hatching would be to
remove them with a good metal nit comb, or your fingertips
. Nits are laid by the mother and attached with a glue she formulates, to sit on the hair shaft. The glue is so strong that they won’t simply fall off; they have to physically be removed!
Can lice eggs hatch after being treated?
The two treatments 9 days apart are designed to eliminate all live lice, and any lice that may hatch from eggs that
were laid after the first treatment

What kills head lice instantly?
Wash any lice-infested item in hot water that is at least 130°F (54°C), put
it in a hot dryer for 15 minutes or
more, or placing the item in an air-tight plastic bag and leaving it for two weeks to kill the lice and any nits. You can also vacuum floors and furniture where lice may have fallen.
What to do when head lice keeps coming back?
- Wash and dry bedding, clothing, and stuffed toys using hot water (130 F) and high heat.
- If the items can’t be washed, seal them in a plastic bag for 3 weeks. Dry cleaning also kills lice.
- Vacuum upholstered furniture and rugs.
What happens if you don’t get all the nits out?
If you do not comb out all the remaining nits,
they will hatch and restart the cycle in 7-10 days from that point
. That’s why we recommend 3 treatments over a 12-day period of time. This stops the life cycle of lice. These are nits at different stages and a louse.
Can lice eggs be black?
Nits are the eggs of head lice.
Brown-black nits are eggs that haven’t hatched into lice yet
. White nits are eggs that have already hatched.
How do you remove lice eggs from hair?
To remove lice and nits by hand,
use a fine-tooth comb on wet, conditioned hair
every 3–4 days for 3 weeks after the last live louse was seen. Go through small sections of hair at a time. Wetting the hair temporarily stops the lice from moving, and the conditioner makes it easier to get a comb through the hair.
Do nits pop when they are dead?
Children, like adults,
do not want nits in their hair- dead or alive
. The time it would take to make the distinction is time far better spent removing ALL the nits. Some people will “pop” them and confirm its viability. Just because there is a louse inside does not confirm the fact that is was alive.
