As a first year applicant you can expect to earn

from your placement. Due to recent changes to the tax laws in the U.S. all J1 participants will now have taxes deducted from their pocket money and be required to complete a US Tax Return form after their return to their home county.

Yes you don’t get paid much, yes you pay more to go than you get paid there but

it’s worth it

. Working with so many different kids from all sorts of life is amazing. There’s not much time off as well but it’s still worth it.

The payment for your visa to work at camp will be made at the time you book your appointment and will go directly to the US Embassy only

. Every participant on the programme (unless you’re a US passport holder) will need to be granted a J-1 Visa and Camp America do not issue the fee for this nor do we keep that payment.

If you are at a camp where the campers stay overnight,

you will normally be given a period off during the day to have some time to relax

. Obviously there always needs to be staff working, so you’ll work on a rota basis with the other Counsellors. You’ll also have certain evenings off and normally 1 full day off a week.

Skills such as; archery, rock climbing, kayaking, gymnastics, ropes, lifeguarding, horseback riding, motorboat driving, magic, piano, riflery, sailing, swim teacher, tennis, trapeze, wakeboarding, waterskiing and windsurfing are always in high demand with camps.

How old do you need to be to do camp America?

You must be

18 years or over

before the 1st June of the summer you want to take part in. This is due to visa and insurance regulations that we must strictly follow. You can still start your application and be interviewed before you turn 18 though!

Is it too late to apply for camp America?

(depending on availability of embassy interviews in your country of application). A late application fee may apply for all applications received after 1st March.

Can I do camp America if I’m not a student?

The only age requirement is that you must be 18 by June 1st. Do I have to be a student to apply?

No, you don’t have to be a student to be a camp counselor

. However if you would like to work in a support staff role such as working in the camp office, kitchen, maintenance or laundry then you must be a student.

. As we’re a cultural exchange programme, we believe it’s something that should be experienced by yourself and the camps also prefer this!

The people interviewing you will have been to work at camp previously and should make the interview

– it won’t be like going for a formal interview at a bank for example. Usually interviews are face to face but you might be asked to have one over Skype.
