I believe I have already said, although briefly, aquarium fish are diurnal, meaning they require an average of

8 to 12 hours of rest a day

. From my experience, most species will be active during the day when light is in abundance and only retire into their caves and what have you at night.

How do you know when fish are sleeping?

It's pretty easy to tell when fish are sleeping:

they lie motionless, often at the bottom or near the surface of the water

. They are slow to respond to things going on around them, or may not respond at all (see some sleeping catfish here). If you watch their gills, you'll notice they're breathing very slowly.
