White Sands doesn’t offer hotel accommodations or RV/car camping within the monument
; however, we do offer primitive backcountry camping in the heart of the dunes. You’ll also find many public and private campgrounds and RV parks within one hour’s drive of the park.
Can you Boondock in White Sands National Park?
Though we do have primitive camping sites for backpackers,
there is no campground for RVs or vehicles within White Sands National Monument
. However, there are many campgrounds, both public and private, within an easy drive of the park.
How long can you stay in White Sands?
If you plan on hiking you could spend quite awhile there since there are 5 different trails with the longest being about 5 miles. If you just plan to drive thru and look at the dunes, play in the sand a bit and spend some time in the visitor center then
2-3 hours
should be enough time.
Can you drive an RV through White Sands National Park?

there is no RV parking or camping inside White Sands National Park

What is the best time to visit White Sands National Monument?
Go
early or late in the day
– It can get HOT here (it is a desert, after all), so to avoid the highest temperatures, go early in the morning or later in the day. Lisa and I went around 4 p.m. and stayed until dark in early October, and the temperatures were just about perfect.
Is sunrise or sunset better at White Sands National Park?
White Sands National Monument is no different in terms of when to photograph than any other place except for one major difference.
Access to the monument is not open for sunrise with the admission gate opening roughly half an hour after sunrise
. The gate at night closes shortly after sunset as well.
