‘DNAR
order’ is not a legal term
: it refers to two types of direction which are legally very different. The first (which we will call ‘type 1’) is a clinical decision for a patient who lacks capacity: a decision that should be made in the patient’s best interests at the time of cardiac arrest.

Who can complete Dnacpr form?
Anyone can write an Advance
Decision for themselves. A DNAR form has to be issued and signed by a doctor so you can’t write one yourself – although you can ask to have a discussion about CPR with your doctor.
Can a Dnar be reversed?
Can a DNR order be revoked?
Yes
. An individual or authorized decision maker may cancel a DNR order at any time by notifying the attending physician, who is then required to remove the order from their medical record.
What to do if someone has a Dnar?
If someone has a DNAR form and they are moving location, for example from hospital to a care home, then national guidelines recommend that they take
the original signed DNAR form with
them.
Is a photocopy of a ReSPECT form valid?
What if the form is a photocopy? The ReSPECT form should not be photocopied to avoid difficulties with version control. However in an emergency a ReSPECT form
copy should be considered to be the valid version unless there is clear reason to judge otherwise
.
What happens if a DNR is not followed?
Rather, the more common error occurs when the physician has not written a DNR order
because the patient’s end-of-life wishes have not been clarified
. It is this delayed communication that can lead to higher health care costs and higher utilization of the intensive care unit (ICU) for the seriously ill.
Should you do CPR on elderly?
Most older adults do not have the type of heart rhythm that responds to CPR
. Having any chronic disease that affects the heart, lungs, brain and kidneys can lower chances for survival after cardiac arrest. If a person has multiple advanced chronic illnesses, CPR survival will be even lower.
Can a healthy person get a DNR?
Because it is a real-time medical order,
a DNR would typically not be in place for a healthy person
who would likely wish to be resuscitated.
Who can have a ReSPECT form?
ReSPECT
can be for anyone
, but will have increasing relevance for people who have complex health needs, people who are likely to be nearing the end of their lives, and people who are at risk of sudden deterioration or cardiac arrest.

A ReSPECT form is not legally binding and
focuses only on making recommendations about care and treatment that might be considered
in an emergency. A ReSPECT form can be used to draw attention to the presence of an ADRT and should contain relevant aspects within the summary recommendations for treatment and care.

. The ReSPECT process creates a summary of personalised recommendations for a person’s clinical care in a future emergency in which they do not have capacity to make or express choices.
