Chlorsig is an
over the counter antibiotic
in the form of eye drops and ointment for the treatment of various eye infections. Chlorsig is most commonly used as the treatment of conjunctivitis a bacterial infection which causes the eye to discharge yellow/white mucus or pus.
Chlorsig is readily available over the counter without a prescription. It is very effective against a wide range of bacteria and is useful in the treatment of certain bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis. But
it has no effect on viral eye disease, allergy or inflammation
.
Can Chlorsig make conjunctivitis worse?
Conjunctivitis Treatment
Conjunctivitis is often treated by GP’s and Pharmacists using an antibiotic called Chlorsig. Please note that rarely is this the correct option.
It often makes the condition worse due to the preservatives.
How fast does Chlorsig work?
The drops/ointment will start to work straight away, although
it may take 2–3 days for the eye
to look better. It is important that you give the whole course of drops or ointment, as your doctor has told you to even if the infection seems to have gone.
What is the best ointment for conjunctivitis?
Chloramphenicol
. Chloramphenicol is usually the first choice of antibiotic and comes in the form of eye drops. It’s available without a prescription from pharmacies to treat bacterial conjunctivitis.
The main symptom of conjunctivitis is red or pink eyes. If it’s bacterial conjunctivitis, there will often be
yellow or green discharge from the eyes
, which can make the eyelids stick together. One or both eyes might be affected. If it’s viral or allergic conjunctivitis, the discharge is likely to be clear.
Can you use too much Chlorsig?
Do not use for more than 5 days in total except on medical advice
. To minimise contamination do not allow the tip to contact the surface of the eye. Chlorsig is not recommended for children under 2 years except on medical advice.
How long is conjunctivitis contagious for?
Pink eye (conjunctivitis) generally remains contagious as long as your child is experiencing tearing and matted eyes. Signs and symptoms of pink eye usually improve within
three to seven days
. Check with your doctor if you have any questions about when your child can return to school or child care.
