Goals of a related work section
By clearly describing previous work, you can better describe the current limitations and the need for new methodology. It also gives you
an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of the area and helps others relate your current work to other scientific areas
.
- Select a short passage (about one to four sentences) that supports an idea in your paper.
- Read the passage carefully to fully understand it.
- Take notes about the main idea and supporting points you think you should include in your summary.
In HCI (and various ACM-style fields) Introduction is much more direct about your paper and includes only citation of highly relevant papers, while
related work is more about other work
which is in the same general area but is less directly about the topic.
The “Related Work” section should
synthesize your literature review
. You must cite and discuss references gained from at least 3 different sources. These could include technical or scholarly journals, conference papers, books, textbooks, patents, technical reports, theses/dissertations or websites.
Start each paragraph with a sentence describing why the papers discussed in that paragraph are related, citing all of the papers to which the criteria applies. Then write a sentence or two about several of the most relevant papers from the group, highlighting the approach used and relevant findings.
