Cracks don't rise up and expand like
bread
in the oven. Plus it's very rare to actually crack a diamond, and usually when it really does happen, it's caused by striking the diamond with just the right amount of force and pressure at just the right angle.
What causes a diamond to crack?
The “crack” is a reflection from the diamond's girdle and is a so-called girdle reflection. This phenomenon is caused by
the pavilion facets
and is the answer to the horizontal line in the diamond. … The purpose is simply to protect the diamond. A thicker girdle protects better than a very thin girdle.
What can damage a diamond?
Sudden extreme temperature changes can cause damage, however. Diamonds can
chip or fracture from hard impact
, especially in areas where the carbon atoms are not tightly bonded. These areas, called cleavage planes, are the major source of damage to diamonds (figure 2).
What is the only thing that can break a diamond?
As an example, you can scratch steel with a diamond, but you can easily shatter a diamond with
a hammer
. The diamond is hard, the hammer is strong. Whether something is hard or strong depends on its internal structure. A diamond is made entirely of carbon atoms which are joined in a lattice-type structure.
Can you ruin a diamond?
Diamonds are hard, but
they can be damaged
. It is possible to break or chip a diamond. Breaking or chipping isn't the only way to damage a diamond. You can damage a diamond with chemicals that cause it to look dull and cloudy or discolor the stone until it is professionally cleaned.
How can you spot a fake diamond?
To tell if your diamond is real, place the stone in front of your mouth and, like a mirror,
fog it up with your breath
. If the stone stays fogged for a few seconds, then it's probably a fake. A real diamond won't fog up easily since the condensation doesn't stick to the surface.
Does a cracked diamond lose value?
For example, if your diamond happens to be chipped, the bigger the chip, the more likely the stone is to break further in the same place if hit again, and this risk diminishes the value of the diamond.
There is no way to repair chipped diamonds
without causing the damaged stone to lose value.
Can you fix a diamond crack?
If your diamond is cracked,
it's not possible to repair it to the
condition it was before. However, depending on the location of the crack and the size of your diamond, it may be possible for a diamond cutter to recut your diamond. It would be smaller afterward, of course.
Can a diamond have a crack in it?

Can acid destroy a diamond?
In short,
acids do not dissolve diamonds
because there simply isn't an acid corrosive enough to destroy the strong carbon crystal structure of a diamond. Some acids may, however, damage diamonds.
What's harder than diamond?
Moissanite
, a naturally occurring silicon-carbide, is almost as hard as diamond. It is a rare mineral, discovered by the French chemist Henri Moissan in 1893 while examining rock samples from a meteor crater located in Canyon Diablo, Arizona. Hexagonal boron-nitride is 18% harder than diamond.
Are diamonds bulletproof?
It doesn't seem unreasonable to wonder whether diamonds are bulletproof, since diamond is the world's hardest natural material.
Diamonds are not however bulletproof in general
, as while they are hard, they are not particularly tough and their brittleness will cause them to shatter when struck by a bullet.
Can water ruin diamonds?
Contact with water may ruin the diamond
. It may also slide off your finger easily since fingers shrink when underwater.
Does hydrogen peroxide damage diamonds?
Windex and Hydrogen Peroxide Solution.
Soak your diamond ring for about 10–15 minutes. The Windex will remove the day-to-day dirt build up and the hydrogen peroxide
will kill any bacteria
on the ring.
Will a fake diamond sink in water?
Simply drop the loose stone into the water. Because loose diamonds are so dense, they should sink to the bottom when dropped in a glass of water. Many diamond fakes – glass and quartz included –
will float or not sink
as quickly because they're less dense.
