Skin tags (
acrochordons
) are small, noncancerous growths that tend to be the same color as your skin. They often look like a cluster of skin tissue extending out from a tiny stem.

It is not clear exactly what causes skin tags, but it may happen when clusters of collagen and blood vessels become trapped inside thicker pieces of skin. As they are more common in skin creases or folds, they may be mainly caused by

Is there another medical name for a skin tag? Medical terms your physician or dermatologist may use to describe a skin tag include
fibroepithelial polyp
, acrochordon, cutaneous papilloma, and soft fibroma.
Is it safe to take them off with toothpaste? People use toothpaste for all sorts of health-related purposes, from shrinking pimples to treating bug bites. There’s no scientific evidence, however,
that toothpaste effectively or safely removes skin tags.
Skin tags do not grow back after removal
. If you develop other skin tags in the same place after removal, you may just be prone to having them in that area.
The burned skin tag dries out and falls off promptly, but the frozen skin tag may
take up to two weeks to fall
off. Cutting the skin tag with surgical scissors or a scalpel may cause bleeding, but doctors can generally minimize bleeding so it only lasts minutes and perform the procedure safely and cleanly.
Cutting off a skin tag with scissors yourself can lead to
infection or uncontrollable bleeding
, which may require a trip to the ER. (You’d be surprised at how much a large skin tag can bleed if not cauterized or frozen by a professional.) It can also hurt — a lot.
