Time Sert inserts

for head bolt applications are much thicker than the Helicoil brand. They are more like a solid metal bushing which is threaded on the inside and out. The Time Sert brand insert is installed with a special driver.

What is the difference between Heli-Coil and time-sert?

Now the advantage is in the insert. Helicoil is a wire spring, doesn’t sound very secure right? The Time-Sert is

a complete sleeve

with threads on the outside to thread into the hole and a stop tab to keep the sleeve from spinning inside the hole.

What is the strongest thread insert?

Wire thread inserts

are the strongest type of threaded connection. For this reason threads in critical applic-ations such as inside aircraft turbines and nuclear reactors are fitted with wire thread inserts from new.

Is Heli-Coil stronger than original threads?

Our frank advice based on experience of about 40 years is that

there is not a stronger thread at original size than

a wire thread insert of correct length and fitted properly. However, there are some uses for thin walled thread inserts where we would not recommend helicoil type inserts but Time-Serts.

Are Timeserts strong?

Helicoils are faster/easier and

Timeserts are much stronger

. If you’re looking for a long-term solution, go with the Timeserts.

Should I use Loctite on helicoils?

Helicoils designed to be put into dry holes

do not use any form of loctite or thread seal

. A helicoil when inserted properly will have movement inside hole they are inserted into. This is to alow for expansion and contraction of the metal.

Can you install a helicoil without tool?

Yes, the helicoil insert requires a special tap.

The insert can be installed without the tool with some

jockying. Invariably, if you do not purchase the entire helicoil set, something else will break that’s the same size bolt.

How well do helicoils work?

Once installed, HeliCoil inserts are

very reliable and trustworthy

. They have been used for high-performance applications under high stress, they perform very well in most situations.

Is a HeliCoil a permanent fix?

Since Time-Sert inserts are solid,

permanent Loctite

can be used with no problem. Of course it’s best to be careful to NOT allow the permanent Loctite to come in contact with the bolt threads themselves. See the video below showing the HeliCoil brand and the Time-Sert brand 11×1.5 mm inserts.

Are HeliCoil reliable?

The

precision and reliability

of the HELICOIL® wire thread inserts have been well proven by the demands of the aerospace and defence industries over the decades and are used extensively in some of the world’s most popular and modern airliners.

Can helicoils be torqued?

from Cleveland, Ohio. C9 said:

Helicoils are stronger than the original threads

, especially so in aluminum. Torque is all about the bolt and stretching it to – but not beyond – what’s called it’s modulus of elasticity.

Can helicoils back out?

Helicoils are not good to repair threads that get a lot of use because they tend to loosen up in the hole. Also, if you even slightly cross thread them they unwind and wad up in the hole.

Keenserts won’t back out when properly installed

.

How much pressure can a helicoil take?

HELI-COIL® Pipe Thread Inserts are precision formed screw thread coils of 18-8 Stainless Steel wire cold rolled into a sharp crescent diamond shaped cross section having a tensile strength

in excess of 200,000 psi

and a smooth surface of 8 to 16 micro inches.

What does a helicoil look like?

As its name suggests, a HeliCoil is

a helically coiled stainless steel wire that has a diamond-shaped cross-section

. The wire cross-section allows the external portion of the wire to screw into the receiving threads in the housing during installation.

How do you remove a helicoil?

Extraction Tool

This tool has a sharp blade that must be inserted at the top of the helicoil, and while being held in position strike the back of the tool with a hammer. This should wedge the tool into the helicoil and it can then be removed by

turning counter clockwise

.
