Technical Drawing

The supplementary motor area (SMA) is a part of the primate cerebral cortex that contributes to the control of movement . It is located on the midline surface of the hemisphere just in front of (anterior to) the primary motor cortex leg representation. In monkeys the SMA contains a rough map of the body.

Where is the pre supplementary motor area?

The supplementary motor area (SMA) and pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) are, in humans, located on the medial aspect of the brain : in the dorsomedial frontal cortex 3 , 14 , anterior to the leg representation of the primary motor cortex (Fig. 1).

What is the supplementary motor area?

The supplementary motor area (SMA) occupies the posterior one third of the superior frontal gyrus

What happens when supplementary motor area is damaged?

Working Memory Deficits After Lesions Involving the Supplementary Motor Area. The Supplementary Motor Area (SMA)—located in the superior and medial aspects of the superior frontal gyrus—is a preferential site of certain brain tumors and arteriovenous malformations , which often provoke the so-called SMA syndrome.

What is the motor function area?

The motor cortex is the region of the cerebral cortex involved in the planning, control, and execution of voluntary movements . Classically, the motor cortex is an area of the frontal lobe located in the posterior precentral gyrus immediately anterior to the central sulcus.

What is the supplementary motor area responsible for?

The supplementary motor area (SMA) occupies the posterior one third of the superior frontal gyrus and is responsible for planning of complex movements of contralateral extremities but ipsilateral planning to a small effect .

What is Brodmann’s area 6?

Brodmann area 6 (BA6) part of the frontal cortex in the human brain. Situated just anterior to the primary motor cortex (BA4), it is composed of the premotor cortex and, medially, the supplementary motor area (SMA).

What artery supplies the supplementary motor area?

Blood supply for supplementary motor area is mostly by callosomarginal branch of anterior cerebral artery .

What is Brodmann area?

A Brodmann area is a region of the cerebral cortex , in the human or other primate brain, defined by its cytoarchitecture, or histological structure and organization of cells.

What is Dlpfc?

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is an area that is considered central to executive functions in humans.

What is a motor homunculus?

The motor homunculus is a topographic representation of the body parts and its correspondents along the precentral gyrus of the frontal lobe . While the sensory homunculus is a topographic representation of the body parts along the postcentral gyrus of the parietal lobe.

What is M1 in the brain?

The human primary motor cortex (M1) lies in the anterior bank of the precentral sulcus and its primary role is to control body parts movement. M1 also participates, for some aspects, in sensorimotor transformation rather than simply controlling the parameters of movement execution (Schieber, 2000).

What is premotor area?

The premotor cortex is an area of the motor cortex lying within the frontal lobe of the brain just anterior to the primary motor cortex . It occupies part of Brodmann’s area 6. It has been studied mainly in primates, including monkeys and humans. The functions of the premotor cortex are diverse and not fully understood.

Which side of the brain controls motor skills?

The primary motor cortex on the left side of the brain controls movement of the right side of the body, and vice-versa, the right motor cortex controls movement of the left side of the body.

Where is the motor speech area?

Broca’s area is also known as the motor speech area. It is near the motor cortex and utilized in speech production, located in the inferior frontal gyrus .

Where is the motor area located?

The primary motor cortex is located immediately anterior to the central sulcus . Select from the boxes in the center to see larger views. The motor cortex comprises three different areas of the frontal lobe, immediately anterior to the central sulcus.
