Youth accounts on the rise again
From 80 percent in 2012, the share of children aged 12 to 15 years of age with a social media account fell to
70 percent
in 2018, but increased again in 2020, peaking at 87 percent.
A quarter of 8-11s and even more 12-15s
(40%) who use social media say they feel pressure to be popular on these sites or apps all or most of the time.
Ofcom's Children and Parents Media Use and Attitudes report found that
46% of 11-year-olds
, 51% of 12-year-olds and 28% of 10-year-olds now have a social media profile.
Surveys show that
ninety percent of teens ages 13-17
have used social media. Seventy five percent report having at least one active social media profile, and 51% report visiting a social media site at least daily. Two thirds of teens have their own mobile devices with internet capabilities.
