Even though it’s reality TV, the buyers’ stories are real
According to Nathaniel Lambert who was featured on House Hunters International, the TV show actually does stay true to the personal stories of the buyers instead of adding extra drama as other reality shows do.
‘House Hunters’ is about the journey to find a perfect home. The people you see in the series are real people who have searched for, negotiated and paid for a home with their own money. ... Regardless of what goes on during the filming process, Newcamp maintains that fans should continue to support the show.
But don’t discount “House Hunters” as a show with no drama. I’d estimate 80 percent of the couples featured on the show file for divorce within four weeks of filming.
The pay for House Hunters is extremely low
According to Showbiz Cheat Sheet, the couples and families featured on the show are only paid $500 for their time . This amount is split between the entire party filming the episode (Via Mental Floss).
The process for House Hunters is no different. Cast members have already picked and bought the house they will later “choose” on TV . In fact, the show will not cast anyone who hasn’t already closed on a home. This means the back and forth viewers witness during the final minutes of the show are all scripted.
It’s really hard to be chosen to appear on “House Hunters.”
According to Mental Floss, 100-200 people apply to be on the show every week, so if you’re hoping to search for the perfect new house on HGTV, your chances are pretty slim.
