If a sailor hits the 12-year mark before meeting those requirements
, they wear red stripes. Sailors who have qualified for the gold stripes but are later convicted by court-martial or nonjudicial punishment (NJP) must also switch to red.
What is a sailor’s rate?
In the United States Navy, a rate is
the military rank of an enlisted sailor, indicating where an enlisted sailor stands within the chain of command, and also defining one’s pay grade
. However, in the U.S. Navy, only officers carry the term rank, while it is proper to refer to an enlisted sailor’s pay grade as rate.
Senior Chief Petty Officer
is the 8th rank in the United States Navy , ranking above Chief Petty Officer and directly below Master Chief Petty Officer. A senior chief petty officer is a Senior Noncommissioned Officer at DoD paygrade E-8, with a starting monthly pay of $4,739.

Can retired military wear uniform?
A retired officer of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Space Force may bear the title and wear the uniform of his retired grade.

Are you allowed to drink alcohol in military uniform?
New language in AR 670-1 also clarifies the wear of Army uniforms at off-post establishments that sell alcohol. Soldiers wearing their uniform may enter a liquor store to purchase package liquor, for instance.

As far as civilian etiquette goes, the rule of thumb is
women may wear a hat indoors while men must take theirs off
. It is extremely tacky to wear a hat indoors if you are a man. They’re referred to as a cover in the Navy, and yes you’re supposed to take them off when entering a building.
Can I wear a tank top on a military base?
Men cannot wear a tank top or short shorts into official base buildings
. The phrase “no shirt, no shoes, no service” applies even if you are stopping by the store at the base beach.
Additionally, when walking from point to point while in uniform,
it is inappropriate and detracts from a professional military appearance for personnel to be smoking
or using tobacco products, or to be eating and/or drinking.
While in uniform,

and detracts from military smartness for personnel to have their hands in their pockets.
What is a no shave chit?
It’s the most notable change to Navy grooming policy since 2019, when the service did away with long-standing no-shave chits, or waivers, that
allowed Navy personnel to grow quarter-inch facial hair
. The previous rule was condemned for having a racial bias against sailors of color.
Why did sailors wear bell bottom trousers?
The trouser material is made of cotton fibers that swell when wet and can hold air.
In the event of a sailor falling overboard or having to abandon ship without a life vest, the bell-bottomed trousers can be quickly removed in the water without having to remove footwear

In 1803 the British began using chevrons with the points down
as rank insignia
. Sergeants wore three and Corporals two. Perhaps they wore them with the points down to avoid confusion with the earlier length of service chevrons worn with the points up.
