There should be no grease/lube any where around the bars/stem/forks except in the headset bearings
. Check the various manuals out, an assembly lube, or paste, especially on Carbon Fiber parts, is necessary, and a light application of lube or anti-sieze can keep things tight and help to avoid slippage.
Can I use any type of grease for my bike?
Most general purpose bike greases seem acceptable but all lack performance data
. Alternatively, automotive greases (e.g. Mobil XHP222, Motorex Bike Grease 2000) comply with industrial performance standards. Washout kills bearings, so keep degreasers and power washers away!

How do you grease bike headset bearings?
Is White lithium grease good for bicycle bearings?

to keep components moving smoothly, free of friction and seizing
. You can also apply it preventatively to protect against rust and corrosion. White lithium grease can be used to: Lubricate car door hinges.
Which grease is best for bearings?
Lithium based greases
are very popular as bearing grease due to their water resistance and performance characteristics in both high and low temperatures. Greases comprised of synthetic lubricating fluids perform well in extreme low and high temperature ranges.
Does marine grease work on bikes?
Coastal Marine Lubricant/Grease –
seems to be more suitable for bicycle use
. It’s an anhydrous calcium grease, one of the few not EP rated and with an NLGI 0 classification and SG of . 92, seems less viscous than most.
Do carbon forks need a crown race?
The crown race is the only thing that separates the headtube and fork
. Without it, the headtube (of the frame) and fork will sit flush against each other. With no gap between the two surfaces, they will grind against each other, causing damage to both the forks and headtube.
Can you reuse star nut?
Have you got a star nut for the top of the fork.?
You can reuse the old one if the steerer tube is the same diameter all the way down
which will allow you to knock the old one all the way through. To fit the star nut, screw in a bolt and tap the star nut down into the fork by a about CM.
What is Crown race?
A crown race
sits at the bottom of the steerer tube and mates with the lower bearings
