34D means that your band size is 30 to 31 inches and your bust size is 37 to 38 inches . Typically, if you wear a D cup size, it means that the distance between the ends of your nipples and your rib cage is about four inches.
If your band fits great but your cups are too big or too small, keep the band size the same and just adjust the cup size based on your needs. For example, if you are wearing a 34B bra that fits in the band but has cups that are too small, you should choose a 34C .

First measure around your body right under your breasts where the bra band sits. Pull the measuring tape snug but not tight (diagram A). Or measure from the middle of your chest to the center of your spine, under your remaining breast where the bra band sits. Double this figure.

So a woman wearing a 36C can wear a 34D , and how it would fit, it would be tighter around the ribcage but the cup would be the same. So technically a 38C cup wearer has smaller breasts than a 30DD cup wearer.
Generally, the A cup is considered the smallest available but for some this is still too big and compensating with a smaller band size won’t help. If you want something that’s going to fit your form you’ll have to go down a level to an AA or even AAA cup.
In standard bra sizes, the number denotes band size and the letter denotes cup size. So 34C has a bigger cup size than 34B but the same band size .
