All helicoil inserts have the same basic shape. They are wound coils that look like springs calibrated to accept the threads of a bolt or threaded fastener. When you install a helicoil insert,

you position it in a pre-drilled hole using a special helical coil tool that screws it into place inside the hole

.

How does a helix coil work?

The coils are wider than the tapped hole.

They are inserted into the hole, and as the bolt is screwed down, the coil expands, creating a tight, firm seal against the threads

. When properly installed, helical inserts create a permanent bond that is stronger than the original bolt fastening.

Do HeliCoils work in aluminum?

An installed HeliCoil threaded insert provides a secure threaded connecting point for accessories on engines with aluminum heads

.

What keeps a HeliCoil in place?

How does helicoil stay in place?

The HeliCoil insert itself has special threads designed to grab the walls of the part, and the tang is there to help drive the insert into place

. Free running inserts are fully rounded inserts that are slightly larger than the hole they install in.

Do you put Loctite on helicoils?

Apply LOCTITE

2620TM Threadlocker into the helicoil

2620TM was selected because it is a high-strength threadlocker that can handle the high temperatures the headers will face.

Can you tap a helicoil?

The threads made by the tapper used for helicoil is not going to work with the standard size bolts. The taps used are specific STI (Screw Thread Insert) tools. But of course,

if you decide the old thread is not too damaged you can use a standard tap and try to fix it

.

How much pressure can a helicoil take?

HELI-COIL® Pipe Thread Inserts are precision formed screw thread coils of 18-8 Stainless Steel wire cold rolled into a sharp crescent diamond shaped cross section having a tensile strength in excess of

200,000 psi

and a smooth surface of 8 to 16 micro inches.

How are helicoils installed?

Are helicoil taps different?

Can a standard tap be used instead? Once installed,

the internal threads of the HeliCoil insert are designed for use with standard sizes of fasteners

. To work correctly, the spacing of the coils of the HeliCoil wire is installed with the same pitch (spacing between threads) as the fastener for which it is intended.

What is better than a HeliCoil?

Time Sert inserts

for head bolt applications are much thicker than the Helicoil brand. They are more like a solid metal bushing which is threaded on the inside and out. The Time Sert brand insert is installed with a special driver.

How do you HeliCoil an engine block?

What is HeliCoil tap?

Heli-Coil STI (Screw Thread Insert) taps are

used for general and machine operations

. The standard STI tap can be used as a basic tool to create threads ideal for threaded inserts. It is recommended that these taps are used with a CNC machine or other high-precision equipment in order to ensure a proper class of fit.

Can you install helicoil without tool?

Yes, the helicoil insert requires a special tap.

The insert can be installed without the tool with some jockying

. Invariably, if you do not purchase the entire helicoil set, something else will break that’s the same size bolt.

How do you break Tang off helicoil?

The Tang Break-off Tool is important

If the tang is not properly removed, the hole may be compromised and will not allow the male fastener to pass through. The best way to remove the tang is

through a sharp strong force directed away from the installed insert

.

What Tap do I need for helicoil?

Heli-Coil STI (Screw Thread Insert) taps

How do you install a helicoil aluminum?

Can a helicoil back out?

Heli-Coil Removal Methods

Try using an “easy out” to lightly grab the helicoil and thread it back out

. Drill the insert out (if debris will fall into engine, make sure the valves are closed and a bore-scope can be used to insure all is removed).

Are HeliCoils strong?

If a thread is “static” i.e. not likely to be done up and undone more than a few times in its lifetime, we would always say a helicoil type thread is the strongest option.

Can you put a Heli-Coil in cast iron?

In order to tap a hole for a Heli-Coil insert in cast iron, you must make sure you have the right type of milling machine

. Cast iron is very hard and when you drill and tap a hole, you must run the machine at a very low speed and feed the tools at a very slow rate to avoid breaking them.

How do you Rethread cast iron?

Can helicoils be used in through holes?

If the thread was completely stripped out to begin with, you can skip the drilling step, because the hole will already be at the correct diameter for tapping for installation of the HeliCoil.

For a through hole you can run the tap all the way through for a full thread
