Provera is in a class of drugs called progestins and is a synthetic form of progesterone—a hormone naturally produced after ovulation (when an egg is released from an ovary). It works
by correcting the hormonal balance and regulating ovulation

How many days after taking Provera do you get your period?
Your period should occur
3 to 7 days after
starting Provera. If you do not have a period after you finish a course of Provera, check with your doctor in case you are pregnant. Take the tablet as soon as you remember, and carry on taking the tablets at the normal times.
What happens after taking Provera?
Nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, headache, change in vaginal discharge
, mood swings, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, or weight gain/loss may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
What does it mean if Provera doesn't start period?
If there is no period after stopping the Provera,
it suggests there may be a blockage in the uterus
. It's also possible the lining of the uterus (which requires estrogen) never built up in the first place, so further evaluation would be required.
Do you ovulate on Provera?
Although
Provera may affect ovulation
and impair fertility, you are not advised to take Provera as a substitute for some other form of contraception because it does not prevent the release of an egg (ovulation).
Does Provera make you bleed more?
This is because PROVERA helps to balance the effect of estrogen. You will know that PROVERA is effective if it induces a period (
any bleeding more than light spotting
) within 2 weeks after PROVERA is given. This bleeding will usually occur 2-7 days after the PROVERA is finished.

Can I get pregnant on Provera?
Depo-Provera has a failure rate of less than 1% when it is used correctly and consistently.
When used correctly only 3 in 1,000 women will get pregnant
. You should take a pregnancy test if you are experiencing any pregnancy symptoms.
What happens if you miss a day of Provera?
Otherwise, take it as soon as you remember,
and then go back to taking PROVERA as you would normally
. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose that you missed. This may increase the chance of you getting an unwanted side effect.
What happens if progesterone does not start period?
If your progesterone level doesn't rise as it should during your cycle, you may experience
irregular menstrual cycles
. Why? A low progesterone level not only prevents your uterine lining from thickening, but it also may trigger premature shedding of the lining, resulting in a short luteal phase.
When will I ovulate after taking Provera?
Most women will ovulate, or release an egg,
24 hours after
this trigger.
What happens if I get pregnant while taking medroxyprogesterone?
Medroxyprogesterone can cause birth defects.
Do not use if this medicine
you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment.
How long after taking Provera can you get pregnant?
You can become pregnant after taking Depo-Provera®. You could become pregnant
as soon as 12 to 14 weeks after your last
shot. It could also take up to a year or two to conceive after stopping this type of contraception.
Is Provera used to stop periods?
For the treatment of stopped menstrual periods (
amenorrhea
) and abnormal bleeding from the uterus, take this drug usually once daily for 5-10 days during the second half of the planned menstrual cycle or as directed by your doctor. Withdrawal bleeding usually occurs within 3-7 days after you stop taking the medication.
Should I take Provera in the morning or night?
Take PROVERA
at about the same time each day
. Taking it at the same time each day will have the best effect. It will also help you remember when to take it. Continue taking your medicine for as long as your doctor tells you.
How quickly does Provera work?
If I take it less than 10 days, it usually takes anywhere from
3-14 days
to start my cycle. I recently passes a kidney stone (ouch) which interrupted my provera schedule so I was only able to make it dose # 4.
