Is a helicoil as strong as original threads?
Our frank advice based on experience of about 40 years is that
there is not a stronger thread at original size than a wire thread insert of correct length and fitted properly
. However, there are some uses for thin walled thread inserts where we would not recommend helicoil type inserts but Time-Serts.
Are HeliCoils reliable?
The precision and reliability of the HELICOIL® wire thread inserts have been well proven by the demands of the aerospace and defence industries over the decades
and are used extensively in some of the world’s most popular and modern airliners.
What’s better than a helicoil?
Time Sert inserts
for head bolt applications are much thicker than the Helicoil brand. They are more like a solid metal bushing which is threaded on the inside and out. The Time Sert brand insert is installed with a special driver.
Can you torque helicoil?
Generally though Helicoil inserts should be a bit stronger than the original thread.
You should be able to use the same torque settings as original
.
What is Max locking torque?
So, the maximum locking (prevailing) torque going into the bolt is measured, as is
the minimum torque required to remove the bolt
. Semantically speaking, the torque value table measures the maximum torque for installation, and the minimum torque for removal.
Can helicoils be removed?
Removing helicoils is a very difficult task, but
it can be done with a helicoil extraction tool
. This tool has a sharp blade that must be inserted at the top of the helicoil, and while being held in position strike the back of the tool with a hammer.
What is the strongest thread insert?
Wire thread inserts
are the strongest type of threaded connection. For this reason threads in critical applic-ations such as inside aircraft turbines and nuclear reactors are fitted with wire thread inserts from new.
Can helicoil be used in steel?
The improved distribution of preload-force increases the fatigue strength of dynamically loaded bolts. This is why
HELICOIL® inserts are also used for highstrength holding materials, e.g. steel or cast iron alloys
.
How does a HeliCoil stay in?
Do helicoils work in aluminum?
An installed HeliCoil threaded insert provides a secure threaded connecting point for accessories on engines with aluminum heads
.
What is the advantage of using a HeliCoil?
Some of the advantages of using a Helicoil include…
A large range of available thread diameters allow for use in a variety of thread repair applications
. According to published data, inserts are available as small as a #2 screw size, and as large as 1 1/2′′ diameter. Corresponding metric sizes are also available.
How do you stack HeliCoil inserts?
How do you fix a failed HeliCoil?
How well do helicoils work?
Once installed, HeliCoil inserts are
very reliable and trustworthy
. They have been used for high-performance applications under high stress, they perform very well in most situations.
Do you use Loctite on helicoils?
Apply LOCTITE
®
2620TM Threadlocker into the helicoil
2620TM was selected because it is a high-strength threadlocker that can handle the high temperatures the headers will face.
What is the torque for a 13mm bolt?

Can you install a helicoil without tool?
Yes, the helicoil insert requires a special tap.
The insert can be installed without the tool with some jockying
. Invariably, if you do not purchase the entire helicoil set, something else will break that’s the same size bolt.
