Spandrel Glass is
a heat-processed glass with ceramic frit permanently fused to the surface of the glass
. Since it is tempered or heat-strengthened glass, spandrel glass is two to five times stronger than annealed glass and more resistant to uniform loading pressures and thermal stresses.
What is a spandrel glass?
Unlike vision glass, which is meant to be transparent, spandrel glass is
a non‐vision application designed to be opaque in order to help obscure the spaces between
the floors of a building, including insulation, vents, wires, slab ends and mechanical equipment.
Can you see through spandrel glass?
Unlike vision glass, which is meant to be transparent, spandrel glass is
designed to be opaque
in order to help hide features between the floors of a building, including vents, wires, slab ends and mechanical equipment. Highly transparent vision glass cannot be perfectly matched with spandrel glass.
Can spandrel glass be tempered?
Spandrel glass must be HEAT TREATED to withstand high thermal stress. If the Spandrel is intended for an opening where safety glass is required by law or code or where human impact is a concern, the
glass substrate should be TEMPERED
.
What does vision glass mean?
The product is a
coating that used to be sprayed on glass
(and still can be in some areas), but today is roller coated or screen printed, run through a drying oven (flashing off volatiles) and then run through a tempering oven.
What type of finish is used on spandrel glass?
Spandrel glass uses
ceramic frit, silicone coatings or polyester film
applied to the glass in order to render it opaque.
What is frit glass used for?
In a fritted glass filter, a disc or pane of fritted glass is used
to filter out solid particles, precipitate, or residue from a fluid
, similar to a piece of filter paper. The fluid can go through the pores in the fritted glass, but the frit will often stop a solid from going through.
How do you specify spandrel glass?
Spandrel glass is the
opaque glass that conceals structural building components
such as columns, floors, HVAC systems, vents, electrical wiring and plumbing, preventing these from being visible from the exterior of the building.
Is 0.75 eye prescription bad?
For both types, the closer you are to zero the better your vision is. For example, even though measurements of -0.75 and -1.25 both qualify as mild nearsightedness, the person with a spherical error of -0.75 is technically
closer to 20/20 vision without their glasses on
.
Is 1.25 eye prescription bad?
A 1.25
eye prescription is not bad
. It is considered relatively mild and some people won’t need prescription eyewear for it.
What is a 20 30 vision?
If you have 20/30 vision, that means
what you see comfortably at 20 feet
, can be seen by a person with “normal” vision at 30 feet. Your vision is weaker, in other words.
What is Shadow Box glazing?
A curtain wall shadow box is a
spandrel assembly
consisting of vision glass at the building exterior and an opaque infill at the interior side of the curtain wall system.
Why are spandrels opaque?
Unlike vision glass, which is meant to be transparent, spandrel glass is
designed to be opaque in order to help hide features between the floors of a building
, including vents, wires, slab ends and mechanical equipment.
Is fritted glass expensive?
Price: Relative Price Scale: 1 = lowest | 4 = highest cost. Most of our glass typically ranges $15-$
70 /sq. ft.
, depending on type, size, thickness, and fabrication. Relative Price Scale: 1 = lowest | 4 = highest cost.
